Munich, often called the northernmost city of Italy by local Italians, has kicked off the carnival season. With the coronation of the Munich Prince and Princess on January 3 at 11:11 a.m., the festive season, the fifth season in Munich, began. The annual, traditional market women's dance at the Viktualienmarkt in Munich takes place on Shrove Tuesday, February 17, 2026. The festivities begin at 10:00 a.m. with a stage program featuring the market women performing their dances in colorful and elaborate costumes. This highlight of Munich's Carnival season marks the end of the peak Carnival period, which in 2026 will be celebrated around Rose Monday (February 16th) and Women's Carnival Day (February 12th)... The pub carnival in Munich is getting colorful again
The city center pubs, including Andechser am Dom, Augustiner Klosterwirt, Augustiner Stammhaus, Weissen Bräuhaus im Tal, Augustiner am Platzl, Hofbräuhaus, Zum Franziskaner, Restaurant Donisl, Hackerhaus, Schlagerbar ROY, and Der Pschorr (Partykeller Alice), are hosting events. You can find their events on their websites during the carnival days...
One event is the white sausage breakfast at the city center pubs on Rose Monday.
Eat white sausage on Rose Monday! This is an old tradition on Monday morning starting at 10 a.m., because the white sausage shouldn't hear the noon bells.
Special prices on Rose Monday at participating restaurants: one to two euros per Weißwurst (Bavarian white sausage).
Participating restaurants in 2026 include, for example: Andechser am Dom, Donisl, Hofbräuhaus, Spatenhaus, Augustiner Wirtschaften am Dom and am Platzl, Klosterwirt and Stammhaus, Weisse Bräuhaus, and Franziskaner.
"Dance of the Market Women" (they insist on this term)
Anyone who has ever seen, or better yet, experienced, these lively women in their colorful costumes is captivated. The Dance of the Market Women at the Viktualienmarkt has been a Munich tradition for over 100 years. It was created to improve the image of the "grumpy market women"—back then, and up until the 1980s, they danced at their market stalls—the honey woman and her colleagues. For over 30 years, this tradition has been continued on stage on Shrove Tuesday. They perform at 10 a.m. on the last day of Carnival. Every year. In all weather. Then, in their colorful costumes, which surprise anew each year, they float across the stage at the Viktualienmarkt. They dance and laugh their way into the hearts of the audience. The costumes of the dancing market women from the Viktualienmarkt are now museum pieces and, like the women themselves and their Shrove Tuesday performance, a piece of Munich's cultural history.
