The Historic Airfield – Home to the German Museum's Spaceflight Collection

Bavaria's oldest still-active airfield: Its proximity to the state capital, Munich, is sure to attract many visitors. The airfield has existed for over 100 years (since 1912) – originally used primarily as a military airfield. The aircraft hangar, established in 1919, has been complemented since 1992 by modern exhibition halls that house the German Museum's aviation and spaceflight collection.

It was a long road from the replica of a "normal flying machine" developed by Otto Lilienthal (1848–1896), with which he began testing gliding flights in 1894, to the first prototype, the DA 1 (Development Aircraft), of the legendary Eurofighter. And it could have been a purely male story, were it not for the daring female pilots like Melli Beese, Thea Rasche, and Hanna Reitsch, who graced the stage of aviation history.

The aircraft hangar vividly illustrates the history of aviation and the development of flight technology—including pilots' clothing—right up to space travel. A museum that is guaranteed not to be boring and is suitable for all ages.

Classics of Mobility

In connection with the Transport Museum, the sight of the animal might also bring to mind caravan culture and the idea of the portable home.

This line of thought brings us back to the Transport Museum, a museum for classics of rail and road mobility from over 150 years:

including motor vehicles, various original locomotives, trams, passenger cars, and historic bicycles.
