In 1963, Vicco von Bülow acquired the lakeside property, where he worked creatively in his small studio and entertained his guests.

Loriot was an honorary citizen of Münsing, and Ammerland was his retreat.

The small village of Ammerland on the shores of Lake Starnberg belongs to the idyllic municipality of Münsing. It's a wonderful place to relax in both winter and summer. In the mornings, you can pick up bread rolls from Graf's bakery, and at lunchtime, fresh whitefish from Seebald's fisherman—where you can also sit in the garden and enjoy freshly smoked fish. Loriot appreciated this! Vicco von Bülow, who captured his brilliant humor here—in a small studio next to his house—lived for a good 48 years in a beautiful villa overlooking the lake.

A major leisure fair in Munich will showcase how the desire for travel has changed, starting February 18th – Crete will be the partner country in 2026

From February 18th to 22nd, 2026, at the Munich Trade Fair Center in Riem, Travel and Leisure Fair Motorcycle Exhibition and Auto days  (Español, Deutsch, English, Italiano, Français)

Munich. The major travel and leisure fair "Free" has been held for 55 years and will launch on February 18th, 2026, concurrently with IMOT (motorcycle show) and the Munich Auto Days at the Munich Trade Fair Center. Over 900 exhibitors from 50 countries will present the latest innovations from all areas of leisure, including camping, cycling, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), climbing, and diving. The fair will also address the desire for new forms of travel, helping with vacation planning. As surveys – a representative YouGov survey commissioned by the travel and leisure fair – show, the desire for "nature and tranquility when choosing a vacation" is a central theme this year. The beautiful island of Crete will be highlighted as the partner region of the travel fair this year. From February 18th to 22nd, 2026, the inspiration and orientation platform for relaxed, exciting, and individual leisure and vacation planning will attract many visitors to Munich-Riem. • Wellness and relaxation trips have seen particularly strong growth. 22 percent of those who wouldn't have booked such a trip 10 years ago now appreciate them.
• Cruises (18 percent), camping and van life (17 percent), as well as solo trips and city breaks (15 percent each) are also now popular with many who would have ruled out such trips previously.
• For almost 40 percent of respondents, budget and price trends are the most important factors influencing their future travel and leisure activities.
• Around a quarter cite the desire for more nature and tranquility as a key driver.

Traditionally, the route travels through the green-gold landscape past deep blue lakes and the impressive Alpine panorama. While the runners in Munich are running the marathon, the Garagengold is cruising across the country. This is fun, enjoyment, and culture, according to the organizers.

Starnberg Lake. Anyone visiting Munich should not forget the many lakes in the Bavarian foothills of the Alps. The local lake of Munich, as Lake Starnberg is also called, is worth a trip at any time of the year. The water temperature in Lake Starnberg, which is almost 128 meters deep, is currently (December 13, 2024) at 7 degrees and can still increase a little. So: no swimming weather! From Munich you can reach the lake in about 30 minutes, as it is 40 km away. However, parking spaces are rare! But the proximity to Munich invites you to take a day trip. Starnberger See: Anyone who lives here is on holiday

Munich and Starnberg Lake - a train of thought. Incredible. Where otherwise only a quiet rustling sound can be heard, the waves are rushing on the beach in Ambach. A pleasant wind caresses your skin and a shady spot under a tree protects you from direct sunlight. From time to time the seagulls squawk in lively conversation. - By the way, Ammerland has the most beautiful campsite right on the lake!

From here you swim directly towards the mountains

So I sit here and leave the metropolis behind me. The sun glitters on the moving lake. Just enough to understand what the storyteller meant when he wrote:

    It sparkles on the water as if a dwarf had sunk his silver treasure into the lake and it was shining from below.

Sailing boats pass opposite, not far from the bank, past the Buchheim Museum. A surfer does his laps in front of the backdrop of the Alps, which are still covered in snow here and there. Every now and then he lifts himself off the water with his board and floats a few meters.

Children play on the shore. Brave people go into the water at any time of the year.

A cool breath pleasantly caresses my face. You can almost smell the clean air. It's hard to believe that your vacation begins just a few kilometers from Munich.

After a morning at the PC, your eyes will recover quickly. For me it is one of the most beautiful places I know. The wide view of the Alpine chain, in front of it the glittering blue of Lake Starnberg with the Seeshaupter backdrop, the eternal rushing of the water and your head is clear. The morning saved on hard drive and far away.

A small motorboat comes alongside from the direction of Starnberg. The fisherman casts his net in the middle of the lake. It takes a while, but then he accelerates again towards Starnberg. The small boat cuts through the water. The surfer quickly hangs into his slipstream and seems to fly over the water for a few minutes.

A man with a really large dog, a mix between a St. Bernard and a Leonberger, approaches and heads towards the water. The animal greedily slurps the cool water. I put my writing material aside, close my eyes and listen.

Yes, anyone who lives here is on vacation!

Summer: Water temperature in Lake Starnberg 25 degrees

Starnberg Lake. Lake Starnberg is less than half an hour's drive from Munich. Because it is fed with water by the Würm, the lake was also called Würmsee until 1962. With water temperatures of 22-26 degrees, this summer for us it means: swimming fun on the edge of the Alps. We did the test and experienced high waves and so much fun in windy conditions and a water temperature of 25 degrees that neither the children nor we wanted to get out of the water. And in the evening, fisherman Sebald had a Starnberg whitefish with seaweed and potato salad in the green garden (in Ammerland).

Pluffism and water fights

House on the lake and UNESCO World Heritage Site “Pile Dwellings”

Another highlight on the shores of Lake Starnberg are the many small branches and sticks that the water washes up when the sea is rough. Children can build wonderful houses.


You get a feeling for how balanced each stick has to be placed so that the statics are correct. And you can impart a bit of knowledge straight away if you tell the little ones about the 5,000-year-old pile dwellings at the bottom of the lake near Rose Island (see below: UNESCO World Heritage List of pile dwellings).

And even small hobby photographers get their money's worth when they take photos from below against the light. Children train their gaze and can try out visual axes, which is just as possible with a small, handy camera as with a smartphone or iPhone.

Sea monsters and fairies on Lake Starnberg

Or make up a sea monster story with your children. Sea monsters, giant fish, a sea fairy or similar fantasy creatures are easily conjured up and you will see what imagination your child develops.

Look at the water together and watch the waves glitter in the sunlight. Then you realize that a dwarf must have thrown his silver treasure in there, otherwise it wouldn't be so shiny.

The Rose Island is ideal for weddings and romantic wedding photos

There is a romantic island in the lake: the Rose Island. King Ludwig II and Empress Sissi had their romantic meeting place here. From Possenhofen you can easily get there with a small electric boat. As an archaeological heritage, the pile dwellings date back to around 5000 BC.  Münsing - Ammerland on Lake Starnberg (today 24 degrees water temperature). We drive from the beautiful Bavarian capital Munich south, Solln, Pullach and then soon towards Wolfratshausen and Münsing to Lake Starnberg. Small forests, green meadows and the Alps and above all the wide, blue sky with bright sunshine. We roll through Icking, Dorfen towards Höhenrain and then on via Münsing towards Ammerland. Ammerland and the bavarian TV-crime series “Hubert and Staller” and later “Hubert without Staller”

 

The town of Ammerland has become famous beyond the borders of the Bavarian Oberland, not least because of the crime series “Hubert and Staller” and “Hubert without Staller”.

The Graf bakery is renamed the Rattlinger bakery as the location for every film shoot for the crime series.

Here you can sit outside when the weather is nice and enjoy the best cake on the lake (editor's opinion): fresh and baked on site by master baker Hubert Graf and his nice master baker.

None other than Loriot has immortalized himself in writing here in the bakery. - By the way, Loriot also got the beautiful fountain monument in Münsing by the small park: a bathtub for Loriot. A scenic route towards Lake Starnberg promises a day of vacation

The village of Münsing also includes the small, idyllic town of Ammerland, which is characterized by the traditional Graf bakery, the castle of the Counts Pocci, the garden of the Sebald court fishery on Lake Starnberg and, last but not least, by the loss of the beautiful steamer jetty at the "Hotel am See" - a few years ago years ago - is still known to many people.

 The Sebald fishing master family has been based in Ammerland for generations - with boat rentals

In the farm shop you can buy everything you need for a good fish meal. All fish specialties are available either to take away or on plates for direct consumption in the picturesque snack garden.  The lovingly designed garden invites you to linger and after the fish meal there are delicious, fresh cakes and coffee.

Swimming fun, cycling tour or delicious fish from the fisherman and a cool Bavarian beer in one of the numerous beer gardens around Lake Starnberg

 

Tip: take the S-Bahn or the bus - without having to look for a parking space, directly to the boat pier and then continue... (GERMAN)

 

Starnberger Lake. Anyone visiting Munich should not forget the many lakes in the Bavarian foothills of the Alps. The Munich locals' lake, as Lake Starnberg is also called, is worth a trip at any time of year and especially in midsummer. The water temperature in Lake Starnberg, which is almost 128 meters deep, is currently (July 8, 2024) at 22 degrees and can still rise a little. So: best bathing weather! From Munich you can quickly reach the lake in about 30 minutes by car, as it is 40 km away. However, parking spaces are rare in summer! But the proximity to Munich invites you to take a day trip. Bike tour on Lake Starnberg

 By the way, the lake has a total length of 21.7 km and if you want to ride around by bike, you should allow almost 6 hours for the SEERUNDWEG - not including breaks and uphill and downhill rides.

So it's better to plan partial routes: Ostuferweg or through the Osterseen from Seeshaupt. But it's also possible on foot! The S-Bahn from Munich takes you to Starnberg or Tutzing and also to Seeshaupt. Here and there there is a waterfront promenade like in Herrsching, where you can stroll along the lake for a full 10 km and here and there you should sit by the water in the beer garden.

 Cozy spots can be found around the lake

But you have to search a bit, because many banks are built-up and private property, but there are designated bathing areas with secluded spots... for example in Bernried. For a comfortable day of swimming, you should consult the nautical chart beforehand and plan straight away!
