Munich holiday destination: Lake Starnberg

Munich tip - holiday destination: Lake Starnberg

Bathing fun on the edge of the Alps - house by the lake - and especially romantic wedding photos on the Rose Island

Summer: Water temperature in Lake Starnberg 25 degrees

Starnberg Lake.
Lake Starnberg is less than half an hour's drive from Munich. Because it is fed with water by the Würm, the lake was also called Würmsee until 1962. With water temperatures of 22-26 degrees, this summer for us it means: swimming fun on the edge of the Alps. We did the test and experienced high waves and so much fun in windy conditions and a water temperature of 25 degrees that neither the children nor we wanted to get out of the water. And in the evening, fisherman Sebald had a Starnberg whitefish with seaweed and potato salad in the green garden (in Ammerland).

Pluffism and water fights

Playing ball, having water fights or throwing stones for the best fun, there is a wide range of play options here. Here is a link to our blog article about pluffism at Lake Starnberg. Link zu unserem Blogartikel über den Pluffismus am Starnberger See

House on the lake and UNESCO World Heritage Site “Pile Dwellings”

Another highlight on the shores of Lake Starnberg are the many small branches and sticks that the water washes up when the sea is rough. Children can build wonderful houses.

You get a feeling for how balanced each stick has to be placed so that the statics are correct. And you can impart a bit of knowledge straight away if you tell the little ones about the 5,000-year-old pile dwellings at the bottom of the lake near Rose Island (see below: UNESCO World Heritage List of pile dwellings).

Wonderful motifs for little hobby photographers

And even small hobby photographers get their money's worth when they take photos from below against the light. Children train their gaze and can try out visual axes, which is just as possible with a small, handy camera as with a smartphone or iPhone.

Sea monsters and fairies on Lake Starnberg

Or make up a sea monster story with your children. Sea monsters, giant fish, a sea fairy or similar fantasy creatures are easily conjured up and you will see what imagination your child develops.

Look at the water together and watch the waves glitter in the sunlight. Then you realize that a dwarf must have thrown his silver treasure in there, otherwise it wouldn't be so shiny.

By the way, this drawing later came into my children's book: "Roberto, the talking turtle" brings "Funny Adventures from Munich" - German Version (presented here in the blog): "Roberto, die sprechende Schildkröte" bringt "Lustige Abenteuer aus München"

Lake Starnberg - bathtub temperature

It's great to swim here and since it's very shallow almost everywhere, it's an ideal swimming lake for children.

The water temperature at Lake Starnberg today is - 25 degrees Celsius.

Webcams, all places on the lake and more information can be found on the official Starnberg Lake information homepage:

Liner shipping on the lake

A liner goes to the large towns on the lake every day. And there are community tickets for families. ... you can easily find liner shipping on Lake Starnberg on the Internet.

The Rose Island is ideal for weddings and romantic wedding photos

There is a romantic island in the lake: the Rose Island. King Ludwig II and Empress Sissi had their romantic meeting place here. From Possenhofen you can easily get there with a small electric boat. Here is a link to the small island villa, the so-called CASINO in the rose garden designed by Peter Joseph Lenné.

In the garden hall on the Rose Island there is a hall for civil weddings and the establishment of civil partnerships. Up to 30 wedding guests can easily be accommodated here. Registrations for this sought-after wedding location go through the Feldafing municipality registry office:

Registry office of the municipality of Feldafing: Possenhofener Str. 3-5, 82340 Feldafing, telephone (0 81 57) 93 11-0.

Ideal for romantic wedding photographs by professional photographers

“An ideal place for romantic wedding photos,” as wedding photographer Dimitri Davies from Munich explains to us. On his homepage, Davies shows examples of wedding photographs taken in romantic locations around Munich and the Five Lakes Region.

UNESCO World Heritage Site: pile dwellings in Lake Starnberg

The Rose Island and its prehistoric pile dwellings on the bottom of the lake were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011. Here is a link to the 10 new additions to the World Heritage List from 2015: unesco-pfahlhäusern.org/aktuelles/

As an archaeological heritage, the pile dwellings date back to around 5000 BC. If you would like to find out more about pile dwellings as a universal heritage of human history, you can find all 111 pile dwelling sites on the UNESCO homepage under this link, 18 of which are in Germany (3 of which are in Bavaria).

... until today not much has changed and
The water temperature in July invites families to swim.
