September 14 - Photo Competition for Open Monument Day 2025

Photo competition for the Open Monument Day until September 16, 2025

Photo enthusiasts are called upon: Capture valuable details in monuments! The decisive factor is the relevance to the annual motto "Valuable: priceless or irreplaceable?"

DEADLINE: Participants of all ages can take part in the #denkmalschnappschuss competition for the Open Monument Day organized by the German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD) until September 16, 2025 (DEUTSCH)

Nationwide photo competition. From now until September 16, 2025, participants of all ages can take part in the #denkmalschnappschuss, the annual photo competition organized by the German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD) for the Open Monument Day. No expertise is required to win one of the top ten prizes; all submissions of historical monument treasures captured with a smartphone or camera are welcome. The decisive factor is the relevance to the annual motto "Valuable: priceless or irreplaceable?" and the ability to classify your own snapshot. Are there masterpieces of craftsmanship, rare materials, expensive details, curiosities, or elements full of meaning for the people who animate the monument or the photographers themselves?

PLACEHOLDER: Photo of the Munich landmark: Frauenkirche towers (Welsche Hauben) from an unusual perspective - Hardly anyone remembers the Marienhof behind Munich City Hall before the construction site - Here is a photo from the art project "White Lotus" - An Intercultural Ritual" at the Marienhof - Lotus by the artist Hyon Soo Kim, Marienhof, Munich, June 24, 2015, photo Helga Waess - DETAILS about the photo in our blog post:
The characteristic "Welsche Hauben" of the Frauenkirche towers seem to peer curiously over the row of houses: White Lotus? =  Neugierig scheinen die charakteristischen "Welschen Hauben" der Türme der Frauenkirche über die Häuserzeile zu gucken:  Weißer Lotus?

... until September 16, 2025, participants of all ages can enter the #denkmalschnappschuss competition for the German Monument Day of the Open Monuments (DSD).

Enter a brief description of their photos when submitting up to three photos per entry at:

The DSD jury will award prizes to ten atmospheric themed snapshots from all submissions.

The top three winners can look forward to exclusive publication in the November issue of MONUMENTE, the magazine of the German Monument Protection Foundation. These three winners will also receive a high-quality photo print from the prize sponsor, PIXUM, an online photo service. All top ten monument snapshots will receive a PIXUM voucher.

"Winning photos are characterized by an original perspective and a credible mood. Spontaneous snapshots that capture a real moment can also be convincing,"

points out Roland Rossner, photographer and jury member. Sarah Wiechers, team leader for the Open Monument Day, adds on the path to a successful photo with a theme: "Photos that show something not immediately apparent are particularly convincing."

Snapshots shared on Facebook and Instagram using

  • the hashtag #denkmalschnappschuss
  • and linking to the @tagdesoffenendenkmals page receive additional visibility.

Like the adult photography enthusiasts, schoolchildren are also explicitly encouraged to

...discover their surroundings through the camera lens – whether during the summer holidays or on the Heritage Open Day itself – and submit their photos.
