Daniel Zamani and Florian Trott will further sharpen the profile at the Frieder Burda Museum and realize exhibition projects from classical modernism to contemporary art

Museum Frieder Burda: Foundation and family, house and team are looking forward to "promising changes" in the spirit of the museum's 20th anniversary year

Baden-Baden.
The Frieder Burda Museum is bringing two museum experts into the management of the Frieder Burda Museum. With Daniel Zamani, who was previously curator and collection manager at the Barberini Museum, and Florian Trott, who is currently commercial director and member of the board of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, a new leader with double expertise will move to the Frieder Burda Museum in Baden-Baden . Both experts will also be appointed to the board of the Frieder Burda Foundation, where they will organize events in the museum together with Elke Burda and son Dominic Kamp.  Daniel Zamanis will consistently develop the house's program. Florian Trott will manage all commercial, administrative and personnel matters at the house and will design the museum's communicative processes together with Daniel Zamani. The aim is to “further sharpen the profile of the house and realize exhibition projects from classical modernism to contemporary art”, which the outgoing director Henning Schaper has done so far with excellent expertise. Zamani took up his position on July 1st and Trott will enrich the museum on October 1st, 2024.

Director Henning Schaper will leave the museum at his own request in October 2024

Over the last 7 years, Henning Schaper has directed important and successful exhibitions such as

  •     “James Turrell – The Substance of Light” (2018),
  •      “Impressionism in Russia. Departure for the avant-garde” (2021)
  •     or “Value and change of corals. Christine and Margaret Wertheim” (2021)

Henning Schaper thanked the foundation's board of trustees for their "long-term and extremely trusting cooperation and the opportunity to help shape this transformation of the museum." (Museum press release from JULY 1, 2024)

Connections and networks on different levels

The museum will expand national and international cooperation for exhibitions with other cultural institutions. France and the donor Frieder Burda's affinity for the neighboring country will ensure that the exhibition organizers expand their focus on the Parisian avant-garde.

This is a retrospective of the Japanese star artist Yoshitomo Nara (starting in November 2024), which Zamani is creating in collaboration with the Guggenheim Bilbao and the Hayward Gallery in London.

Henning Schaper, the outgoing director of the Frieder Burda Museum, told the press

“It is exactly the right time for me to hand over the baton to other people and devote myself to new tasks. I am very pleased to be able to look back on seven enriching years at the Museum Frieder Burda. I would like to thank the museum team, who work so passionately for the cause, as well as the committee members for the intensive and exciting collaboration and wish the house a successful future under the new management with many inspiring exhibitions and numerous enthusiastic visitors.”

Daniel Zamani, new artistic director of the Frieder Burda Museum

“As an architectural jewel, perfectly integrated into the scenic surroundings of Lichtentaler Allee, the Frieder Burda Museum was something of a place of longing for me from an early age. Accordingly, I am looking forward to my new tasks and to the intensive exchange with the museum team as well as the board and the board of trustees. Together we can develop a diverse and exciting program and further expand the national and international appeal of the house. The guiding principle of my work will always be the founder’s founding vision of bringing people joy through art.”

Florian Trott, designated commercial director of the Frieder Burda Museum

“I have been following the exhibition program and activities of the Museum Frieder Burda enthusiastically for many years and am continually fascinated by Richard Meier's bright architecture with every visit. I'm really looking forward to the new tasks in Baden-Baden. Particularly on continuing the success story of the house together with the team at the museum and the committees of the foundation and being able to set new accents in the process.”

“Frieder Burda's passion for art, his connection to the artists and his belief in the unifying power of art continue to shape the spirit of our house to this day. As a family, we look forward to intensive collaboration with the new members and an inspiring exchange in the spirit of Frieder Burda: to keep his passion and vision alive and to further develop our shared heritage as one of the leading German private museums with an internationally renowned exhibition program.”
