Munich: August 2nd, 2024 is the fountain festival at the Viktualienmarkt

Viktualienmarkt fountain, Bavarian folk music and historical costumes - Munich is celebrating the fountain festival at the Viktualienmarkt on August 2nd, 2024...

Viktualienmarkt: the celebration on August 2nd, 2024 will attract half of Munich to the old town from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m

Munich - Viktualienmarkt. The celebrations take place on August 2nd in Munich. Everything comes together at the fountain festival on Munich's Viktualienmarkt in the heart of the old town. It is just a few steps from Marienplatz to the most famous market square in the Bavarian capital. The stalls and the market women have long been world-famous and are a must for locals and tourists from all over the world. You have to see this in Munich. What better opportunity than the famous fountain festival, where the market stall holders decorate the fountains with flowers and perform in their historical costumes while listening to Bavarian folk music. At the same time, they celebrate their folk artists such as Liesl Karlstadt, Karl-Valentin and the many others who have a bronze figure above a water source here. The fountains can be found in different places in the market and are named after singers and special people. Every August, the Viktualienmarkt honors its fountain figures with festively decorated fountains, live music and traditional dancing. We present all the fountains in the following article in this blog: Celebration tip: Fountain Festival at the Viktualienmarkt. The beer garden at the Viktualienmarkt - you can bring food with you - drinks can be bought from the innkeeper!

When the weather is nice, the Brunnenfest is an opportunity to visit the most beautiful and central beer garden in downtown Munich. You can sit here comfortably under the old, shady chestnut trees, drink something cool and relax after or before your shopping trip, which is always something special in downtown Munich from Kaufingerstrasse to the Fünf Höfe to the noble Maximilianstrasse.

With live music and lively hustle and bustle, you can sit in one of 1,100 seats on the day of the fountain festival and next to nice Munich residents on the classic beer benches. The special thing about Munich beer gardens: where there are no tablecloths (here you can be served) you can eat your own snack and enjoy a freshly tapped beer.

This Munich beer garden has another special feature,

because beers from all six Munich breweries are tapped here - but every 6 weeks a different tasty and golden-yellow drink flows into the beer mugs.

Every 6 weeks you can try the tasty beers from the following major Munich breweries:

  • Hofbräu

  • Spaten Bräu

  • Augustiner Bräu

  • Hacker Pschorr

  • Paulaner

  • Löwenbräu

„Hock di her, dan san ma mehr!“ - “Sit here, then we are more!”

At the Brunnenfest everyone meets here and it is not uncommon to hear the sentence: “Hock di her, dan san ma mehr!” - because wherever there is a free place, every tourist will find a place of enjoyment next to a Munich resident in traditional costume. And as I said, you can bring food with you or buy something cold or warm at the many Viktualienmarkt stalls: everything from Bavarian delicacies such as roast pork or meat patties to pretzels and Obazda.

The fountains and “streams”, beer and champagne - truffles or fish rolls: there is everything at the Viktualienmarkt

There are Kustermann hydrants and a total of six fountain monuments that supplied the Viktualienmarkt in the heart of Munich's old town with water - so there is celebration throughout the entire market. The former farmers' market and herb market has over time become a very valued place for connoisseurs and gourmets. All visitors can choose between traditional Bavarian goods, exotic fruits and specialties. Around 140 stalls and traders, a butcher's row and the beer garden of the Viktualienmarkt are always worth a visit.

Here are a few impressions from the fountain festival at the Viktualienmarkt in 2022
