New Year's Eve Countdown 2025 and New Year's Day 2026 in the Rest of the World

Where is it already "tomorrow" on December 31st?! At 11:00 AM CET, the South Pacific will already be celebrating January 1st, 2026, and at 1:00 PM CET, the Baker and Howland Islands (USA) will be celebrating!

Germany and the rest of the world will be celebrating the arrival of the New Year 2026 on December 31st, 2025 (Deutsch,  English, Français, Italiano, Nederlands)

New Year's Eve - worldwide. AFTER THE YEAR IS BEFORE THE YEAR... :-)))) The New Year's Eve countdown is running in many news tickers, and as every year on December 31st, the question arises: Where is "tomorrow" already?! ... meaning New Year's Day 2026. Here in Germany, many will be preparing their New Year's Eve punch and meals, while the rest of the world will be starting the new year 2026 much earlier and much later. There is a small island republic or atoll on the equator in the South Pacific called "Kiribati" which is the first to celebrate the New Year at 11 a.m. CET - Central European Time. Just 15 minutes later, celebrations are already underway on the Chatham Islands, part of New Zealand and located some 800 kilometers from the mainland. The archipelago comprises 10 islands. Around midnight, the sky illuminates Samoa and Tonga with vibrant colors, and New Zealand quickly follows. The Baker and Howland Islands will be the last to ring in the New Year, a full 26 hours after Kiribati – and a whole 13 hours after us.

15 août – 30 novembre 2025 - Exposition : Dan Flavin avec « Untitled (For Ksenija) » - mar-dim 10h-18h / Jeu. 10h-20h - Entrée libre! - Kunstbau sur la Königsplatz à Munich (English version, Deutsch, FRANÇAIS)

Munich.

DAN FLAVIN - Representative of Minimal Art at the Kunstbau of the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus München

August 15 – November 30, 2025 - Exhibition: Dan Flavin with "Untitled (For Ksenija)" - Tue–Sun 10 a.m.–6 p.m. / Thu 10 a.m.–8 p.m. - Free admission! - Kunstbau on Königsplatz in Munich (English version, Deutsch, FRANÇAIS)

Munich. Over 30 years ago, in 1994, the Kunstbau of the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus München opened in Munich. The design of the underground exhibition hall, which gave the museum more space for art, was the work of the architectural firm Uwe Kiessler + Partner. With the additional exhibition hall, whose dimensions correspond to the subway station below, the Lenbachhaus gained a new dimension in the presentation of art. For the opening, Dan Flavin (1933–1996) developed one of his last "situations." Flavin described these works as "situations" created for a specific location, focusing on light space and perception. The artist Dan Flavin's work is now being shown again: no other work is as closely connected to the Kunstbau as "Untitled (For Ksenija).

The late work confirms Flavin's ongoing artistic exploration of the tension between light art and architecture

In 1994, the Kunstbau of Lenbachhaus Munich was inaugurated. Designed by the architectural firm Uwe Kiessler + Partner, the subterranean exhibition hall—mirroring the dimensions of the subway station directly beneath it—provided the Lenbachhaus with a new spatial dimension for presenting art.

To mark the opening, Dan Flavin (1933–1996) created one of his final "situations". Flavin used this term to describe site-specific works in which the focus lies on spatial light and perception.

No work is more closely associated with the Kunstbau than Untitled (For Ksenija). This late piece reaffirms Flavin's ongoing engagement with the interplay between light art and architecture. By illuminating the exhibition space, he transforms it into a realm of experience. Electric light, color, space, and the bodies and senses of the visitors enter into an inseparable, diffused interaction.

As a leading figure in Minimal Art—a movement that incorporated industrially manufactured materials and radically reduced personal expression—Flavin deliberately distanced himself from the illusionistic imagery of painting, the gestural expression of Abstract Expressionism, and the figurative language of Pop Art. His works consistently respond to their spatial environments, making viewer perception and the relationship to space integral parts of the work.

After early explorations in painting, Flavin began working exclusively with standardized, commercially available fluorescent tubes in the mid-1960s, using them in varied arrangements as his primary artistic medium. His minimalist pencil drawings served as precise conceptual foundations for these installations.

On March 8, 1994, the Lenbachhaus received a fax from the Dan Flavin Studio in New York containing one such minimalist drawing. The sketch outlines both the conceptual framework and specific technical instructions for installing the fluorescent lamps on the Kunstbau's lighting track, documenting the artistic conception of the piece. Flavin developed these drawings into operable structures, enabling each realization to function as a distinct, site-specific model.

Installed along the Kunstbau's four architecturally defined lighting tracks, the colored fluorescent lamps recede physically in favor of an experiential space defined entirely by light. This light not only brings the architecture to life but also profoundly to perception of visitors: movement, light adaptation, and color perception become elements of an aesthetic experience that encourages reflection on space, the body, and perception itself.

Heiner and Philippa Friedrich donated Untitled (For Ksenija) to the Lenbachhaus in memory of their parents Erika and Harald Friedrich, as well as Dominique and John de Menil. The installation is a permanent part of the collection and is now being shown for the tenth time in accordance with the donors' wishes.

Further information about the work and its exhibition history can be found in the rotunda of the Kunstbau

Following the presentation of Dan Flavin’s light installation Untitled (For Ksenija), a collaborative project featuring sound pieces by students from Florian Hecker's "Sound and Experiment" program (Bavarian Excellence Professorship Program – Academy of Fine Arts, Munich) creates a new sensory environment at Kunstbau from December 2 to 7, 2025.

We dedicate both presentations to the memory of architect Uwe Kiessler (1937–2025), whose outstanding contributions have left a lasting impact on Munich's architecture and cultural landscape.

DAN FLAVIN - Vertreter der Minimal Art im Kunstbau der Städtischen Galerie im Lenbachhaus München

15. August – 30. November 2025 - Ausstellung Dan Flavin mit "Untitled (For Ksenija)" -  Di–So 10–18 Uhr / Do 10–20 Uhr - Eintritt frei!

Astuce loisirs : Jardin anglais, Munich

Leisure Tip: English Garden, Munich

Tourism tip Munich: Munich Summer in the English Garden

The Eisbach Wave refreshes spectators, the Monopterus offers a panoramic view, and at the Chinese Tower, you can enjoy a cool beer with live Bavarian music.

From Munich city center, Odeonsplatz, or the university, you can be in nature in just a few minutes – in one of the largest inner-city parks in the world, the English Garden. (Deutsch, Italiano, English, Francais)

Munich. Summer in the city is pure vacation, and anyone who lives in Munich is, in short, on vacation in this globally popular metropolis. Cycling, relaxing, and enjoying! If you don't know the English Garden, you don't know Munich!!! And 5 million visitors annually demonstrate that this park, which is, by the way, larger than New York's Central Park, is a true paradise. Students at Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) can relax on the lawn in the English Garden in five minutes, eat ice cream, read books, and study – or something like that... I, too, fondly remember those days; from the university library or the state library, you could quickly get to the countryside.

There are many famous sights in Munich that you absolutely MUST see!

... among them is the English Garden, the green lung of the metropolis of Munich, and the city's most beautiful amusement park. Here you can sunbathe, there you can cool off in the river, there's even a nude beach, and above all, surfers can enjoy the refreshing ride of a big wave.

The English Garden is a great place to spend your free time, especially in summer.

On foot or by bike (on marked paths), you can enjoy the English countryside atmosphere without end. The park was laid out directly along the Isar River, which meanders along it.

The English Garden is one of the largest inner-city parks in the world

On a hill with a magnificent view towards the Frauenkirche stands the famous Monopteros, not far from which is the Chinese Tower with its beautiful beer garden. The band playing in the pagoda creates a Bavarian atmosphere.

Chinese Tower

The Chinese Tower, probably the most famous wooden structure in the English Garden, and its expansive beer garden, are popular with all visitors to Munich worldwide. In summer, the pagoda, built in the imperial Chinese style, and the brass band playing from it are very inviting. It rises 25 meters high and was designed in 1789.

This structure has been so popular throughout history that it often had to be faithfully rebuilt, as it burned down several times.

In this expansive park, pedestrians and cyclists find a relaxing and shady path.

The English Garden offers plenty of space for this within the city center. And from the Monopterus, a 16-meter-high round temple in the Greek style, you have a fantastic panoramic view!

The English Garden, with its Monopteros, Chinese Tower, Japanese Tea House, and more, is an absolute MUST-SEE when visiting Munich.

The Monopteros

The Greek-style Monopteros, a small round temple, captivates every visitor with its view of the Old Town skyline. Situated on a hill, the temple-like circular structure was erected in 1836 in the southern part of the park.
