Alte Pinakothek presents a significant new acquisition

The Bavarian State Painting Collections have acquired an outstanding painting from the early 16th century - The purchase of Hans Baldung Grien's "Mary as Queen of Heaven" for the Alte Pinakothek's Old German Painting section is something very special

From 2025, June 5th, this significant new acquisition will be on display as part of the collection presentation "How Pictures Tell Stories - Storytelling from Albrecht Altdorfer to Peter Paul Rubens" - in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich (Deutsch)

Munich. The Bavarian State Painting Collections have acquired an outstanding painting from the early 16th century: Hans Baldung Grien's "Mary as Queen of Heaven." It was one of the last privately owned paintings by this fascinating artist from Dürer's era. The work was acquired with funding from the Pesl Foundation Bavaria, the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation, and the Pinakothek Society. This media release, from which we quote below, reached the editorial team of the art-culture blog yesterday. It's great that the collection has been expanded! We, along with the collection management, are looking forward to the presentation of the painting as part of the exhibition "How Pictures Tell Stories..." starting in June 2025.

The artist Hans Baldung, known as Grien (1484/85-1545), is one of the most important, yet stylistically most idiosyncratic and original artists of the Renaissance north of the Alps

He came from Albrecht Dürer's Nuremberg workshop and settled in Strasbourg in 1509. His workshop produced a wide range of small-format devotional images, altarpieces, and portraits, as well as mythological and allegorical depictions. His secular, innovative pictorial themes, in addition to his knowledge of established pictorial tradition, demonstrate the influences of humanist thought as well as contemporary theological discourse.

For stylistic reasons, it can be dated to around 1516/18. The high altar of Freiburg Cathedral, a prestigious major commission for Grien, was also created during these years. He then returned to Strasbourg. It is therefore likely one of the artist's earliest explorations of the subject in the medium of panel painting.

Munich. Le Musée municipal de Munich et la Kunsthalle de Munich ont créé conjointement une exposition Art nouveau très intéressante. Elle revient sur les années 1900, où la société était marquée par des innovations scientifiques et techniques rapides. De jeunes artistes visionnaires se sont réunis à Munich pour donner à l'art une nouvelle forme et ainsi réformer la vie en général. Les gens étaient sur la voie d’un « mode de vie plus juste et plus durable » qui n’avait plus de place pour les modèles historiques qui suivaient une vieille idée traditionnelle.

Le New Art était destiné à produire le format « Art Nouveau »

Des idées et des conceptions artistiques révolutionnaires et nouvelles ont continué à constituer la base de l’émergence de l’art et du design dans l’ère moderne.

Des objets de la collection du Musée municipal de Munich sont présentés, qui illustrent les arts appliqués, la sculpture, la peinture, le graphisme, la photographie, la mode et les bijoux dans un nouveau contexte, pour former une image globale du style jeune et nouveau des années 1900.

L'accent est mis sur le rôle de Munich en tant que « berceau de l'Art nouveau en Allemagne » ainsi que sur les questions de vie discutées à l'époque...

Munich. The Munich City Museum and the Kunsthalle Munich have jointly created a very interesting Art Nouveau show. She looks at the years around 1900 when society was affected by rapid scientific and technical innovations. Young and visionary artists met in Munich to press art into a new form and with it to reform life in general. People were on the way to a “fairer and more sustainable way of life” that no longer had room for historical models that followed an old, traditional idea.

The New Art was intended to produce the “Art Nouveau” format

Revolutionary, new ideas and artistic designs continued to form the basis for the emergence of art and design into the modern era.

Objects from the collection of the Munich City Museum are shown, which illustrate applied art, sculpture, painting, graphics, photography, fashion and jewelry in a new context to form an overall picture of the young, new style around 1900.

The focus is on the role of Munich as a "cradle of Art Nouveau in Germany" as well as the life questions discussed at the time...

Munich. The Christmas tree lights up, the silver grape glitters and the big silver unicorn spins. The Theresienwiese becomes a shining eye-catcher on the Oktoberfest meadow in Munich in the late afternoon. Here the Tollwood Winter Festival attracts visitors with the “alternative Christmas market” with international productions, street theater, organic gastronomy from all over the world and handicrafts. Here you can find great gift ideas and experience almost 90 percent of the events, such as theater, art, music, performances and a great children's program, free of charge. Entry to the festival grounds and to the Market of Ideas and so on is free of charge!

This year there are glowing tent roofs for democracy and community - the motto this year is “We need you!” 

The last decorations are being put on the stands, because tomorrow, Tuesday at 2 p.m., the stands will be lit up and the Tollwood Winter Festival will illuminate its roofs in all its glory.

This year's motto for the Tollwood Winter Festival from November 26th to December 23rd is “We need you!”

Means "Democracy needs commitment and cohesion" and every single one.

As darkness falls, the tent roofs of the festival will turn into glowing canvases. An installation “A luminous manifesto in defense of our democracy,” according to the organizers. At 7 p.m. the audience will see the glowing “Love Story to Democracy” on the roofs of the tents. Then there are the “value benches” in the bazaar tent, which leave behind their own, very personal messages “about democracy and community”.

Another highlight is the breathtaking artistry at the Festival du Cirque

There will be a German premiere with “Deserance”. From Tuesday, November 26th to December 8th, the Italian company Circo Zoé will combine opera singing, electronic live music and incredible acrobatics into a poetic production. 

The Festival du Cirque will bring international productions to the Theresienwiese with “Humans 2.0” by “Circa” and “Duel Reality” by “The 7 Fingers”. There are still remaining tickets available at www.tollwood.de

Car-free adventure mile on the 14th/15th September 2024 - from Munich city center to Schwabing

Munich. There is always something to celebrate in Munich! This weekend from Siegestor to Münchner Freiheit there is again Corso Leopold (corso-leopold.de). It is the colorful street festival where art, culture and politics are accessible to everyone. At the same time, the Zamanand Festival (zamanand.de) is celebrating between Siegestor and Odeonsplatz, so you just have to follow the stages and stands. The artists' adventure mile, performances, live music on many stages and physical well-being are also taken care of.

BADEN-BADEN. On May 17th, extreme mountaineers, musicians, environmental scientists and social researchers will discuss questions about the individual, social and planetary boundaries in our time - our dimension. The question discussed is: If the future is today, then what is tomorrow? The concept for the evening was devised by Ingolf Baur, TV presenter, and Mattes Herre, actor at the Theater Baden-Baden.
