Minister of State Dr. Florian Herrmann emphasized to the press
“The Bavarian Film Prize stands for the outstanding creativity of our filmmakers. This year the jury has selected two names that represent great German cinema: Jella Haase is once again delighting an audience of millions with her return to her cult role as Chantal and her multi-faceted and nuanced performance. Christoph Maria Herbst shone in three major productions in 2024. He embodied very different characters and made each of these figures, with all their depths and shallows, artistically his own with impressive precision. Jella Haase and Christoph Maria Herbst represent outstanding acting and the best entertainment in the film. Congratulations!"
The jury's reasons for Jella Haase
"There are successful actresses who play the role of their life in a film and always remain connected to it. And there are actresses who are so versatile and versatile that they make every role the role of their life. Jella Haase has this ability and she This is not the only reason why they are a phenomenon: their multi-faceted and nuanced playing in all genres never ceases to amaze.
Her portrayal of the student Chantal in the “Fuck ju Göhte” series brought her to the top of the ladder of success! So it's no wonder that author and director Bora Dagtekin enchants his character Chantal into a modern fairytale land in which Jella Hase can literally pull out all the stops of her acting skills: cheeky brat with no plan for life, convincing romantic or wild and self-determined fighter. Jella Haase impresses with her punchy and physically challenging game, impressively showing how she conquers every nuance of her character for the big screen thanks to perfect facial expressions, gestures, movement and language. The joy of playing remains noticeable in every scene and is transferred to us - your amazed audience. This time she even left the Brothers Grimm speechless and that is definitely worth another award." (Press release Bayerische Staatskanzlei from January 8, 2024)
Reasons given by the jury for Christoph Maria Herbst
"Flashing eyes, a mischievous, cautious smile, a small evil look, a clearing of the throat... Christoph Maria Herbst is so frugal and reserved this year in three films that were presented to the jury: "A Celebration of Life", "The Book Walker and “The Nickname.”
Three very different films, what unites them is the “entertainment” genre – often and often maligned and yet so important for the cinema and the viewer, for the heart, stomach and brain.
Characters like the family stinker from “The Nickname”, the busy and overwhelmed wedding planner from “A Celebration for Life”, but also the initially rather misanthropic and melancholic “Bookwalker” seem to be tailor-made for Autumn. But the truth is, he appropriates all of these characters artistically. He creates the visible surface of his roles by shaping their depths and shallows, for example when looks and body language say more about a character than the spoken text. His subtle playing is extremely intense - Herbst resolves this apparent contradiction in a nuanced way by designing people, not reducing them to certain seemingly entertaining clichés of reality. In these three films, Herbst shines in his embodiment of quite different characters - heartwarming as a lonely older man for whom life no longer seems to have anything in store, but for whom an encounter with a 9-year-old girl brings him back to life, or as an actually experienced and calm event manager , from which everything slips away step by step and heads towards a debacle, and finally in the ensemble film “The Nickname” as the always sharp-tongued spoilsport.
It is a truism that the light form can be so difficult - but it should be said again here: to make light, funny, happy and also melancholic things so complex that the respective opposite poles always resonate, even in the light ones, both the depth and the The depths of life can be felt – that is the art of entertainment. This is what Christoph Maria Herbst stands for." (press release Bayerische Staatskanzlei from January 8, 2024)
