Krampus run in Munich
Don't be alarmed: Krampus is on the loose again! In recent years there have been up to 50,000 onlookers in Munich for two races

Munich - Christmas market and Santa Claus. Horns, fur coats, hideous faces, rods and loud bells! If you want to get a real pre-Christmas scare - yes, that's what the tradition allows - then come to the Krampus Run on December 8th at Munich's Marienplatz. They will start rattling, clattering and with a lot of roaring from 3 p.m. on Sendlinger Straße: St. Nicholas' scary companions. The Perchten, Krampus or “Klabaufs” have been part of the Christmas season in the Alpine region for 500 years. You don't have to fear them, but the masks are really "terrible". They like to scare spectators, do wild dances or rejoice when someone screams. The running route on December 8th goes from Sendlinger Straße, across Rosental, through the Kripperlmarkt at Alten Peter and then to Marienplatz to the Old Town Hall. Saint St. Nicholas follows the colorful Krampus groups and, as always, forms the calming rear light of the parade.
The Munich Krampus group “Sparifankerl-Pass”
In 2004, Tom Bierbaumer founded the 20-man Munich Krampus group “Sparifankerl-Pass” and brought Alpine customs back to the Bavarian capital.
The organizers are the state capital Munich with the Department for Labor and Economy and the Munich Christmas Market.
From the Alpine region, the Krampus groups have established this annual run as a custom at the Christmas market in Munich.
If only it gave me the creeps!
Well, then off to the Krampus Run! It starts on Sunday, December 8th, 2024, the 2nd Advent!!!
In the 16th century, the first so-called “Klabaufs” roamed the streets of the Alpine region. The individual costumes cost between 1,800 and 2,500 euros. The Perchten are supposed to drive out winter, they have 4 to 10 horns, the Krampus adorn two-horned masks. The Krampus outfit weighs a lot: a mask around 10 kilograms.
