Munich-Tip: Christmas village in the Residenz

Munich TIP: the romantic Christmas village in the Residenz

Christmas market, live music, nativity scene and fairytale world in the Kaiserhof of the Residenz in downtown Munich - at Odeonplatz

Christmas market until December 22nd, 2024 - 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m (Deutsch,
Français, Italiano)

Munich.
Through the portal to the imperial courtyard of the residence, the path leads us into a “Christmas village” with a fairytale forest. Through the archway you can catch a glimpse of the stage from afar, where smartly dressed musicians and singers sing Upper Bavarian Christmas carols. The Kaiserhof with its stylish facade creates an all-round festive atmosphere and the smell of fried food and all sorts of delicacies makes your thoughts wander back. It brings back memories of times long past, as an older lady who is here with her grandchildren confirms: "I come here every year. It's like before." This kind of romance would hardly exist today. You can find them here. - Entry to the Kaiserhof is free.

Here the elk sings with room music and mulled wine romance

The “Christmas Village” in the residence gives an idea of Christmas peace in the wind-protected inner courtyard of the castle. In the farming village that was created here you will find a life-size nativity scene, craftsmen in alpine huts, a Punch and Judy show for the little ones and a large stage for live music.

So we enjoy the fairy tale boxes with traditional fairy tale characters in Christmas landscapes or Santa Claus' talking elk.

Fine handicrafts are available on site from a wood carver from Tyrol or from a wood pyrography artist who engraves special texts on boards, bowls or even toys.

Large figures rotate in the 14 meter high Christmas pyramid.

  •     until Thursday, December 22, 2024, open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m
  •     On the last day, Sunday December 22nd, 2024, give away a large Christmas tree
  •     From 11 a.m. all Christmas trees that decorated the market can be picked up free of charge

The best way to get to mulled wine, mulled beer, Feuerzangenbowle and the like is by subway and tram

At the first corner it smells of coffee and crepes with chocolate cream and at the next corner it smells of mulled wine - which is also available in white this year. One stand even serves mulled beer.

If you want to try a Feuerzangenbowle, you should take the tram or subway, because hard liquor doesn't just heat you up and a driving license is expensive... and there are no parking spaces in Munich's old town anyway.

Actually, the snow is still missing. But: will it come this year?

A bag of hot chestnuts also brings back memories for us

What was it like back then, as a child, when you went to the Christmas market for the first time of the year. An inner, today indefinable joy arose. The Christmas season was exciting. Here and today the children with big, shining eyes are drawn to the fairytale forest in the imperial courtyard.

There is a life-size nativity scene under the bell tower, next to it is the popular fairytale forest with its talking characters and every Tuesday and Friday there is a Punch and Judy show for the little ones.

Munich fairytale forest in the Kaiserhof

The little ones can't get enough of looking and hearing.

Yes, listen too, because the moose moves its head and speaks. And in general there is really something going on here in the fairytale forest. The wolf or the witch, they are all there and tell their fairy tales. And then a voice announces

He comes from outside the forest and wants to tell us: "It's very Christmassy!"

There is Santa Claus standing in the fir forest:

Alphorn players and brass music

From a distance you can hear an alphorn blowing and the brass band playing Christmas sounds. Yes, it's a nice, manageable Christmas market where many an office community rings in the end of the day, grandmas take a photo with their grandchildren in Santa's sleigh and the organic mulled wine warms up young and old.

There is live music from Abphornbläser and “Stubnmusi” every day on the round stage.

Here you can also simply watch the artisans such as goldsmiths or glassblowers and buy some gifts.

Back to Residenzstrasse

We can still hear the men's choir in the background. Children drag their parents towards the Punch and Judy show.

Until December 22nd, Christmas village in the residence - daily from 11 a.m

The program from December 14th to 22nd changes daily, is properly thought out in Bavarian style, gets young and old in the pre-Christmas mood and invites you to take a break away from the hustle and bustle.

By the way, this is also a good meeting place for appointments, as three students tell us:

"We always meet at the moose! Only those in the know know where it is!"

In the huts, old crafts are demonstrated and handicraft products are available for purchase

You should definitely try: Baum-striezel, tarte flambée, potato specialties, crepes, Debreziner in beer batter, meat skewers, cream pastries, bratwurst specialties (half a meter of bratwurst, giant firewurst), Christmas ham, cabbage donuts, Käsekrainer, rolled roast, schnitzel roll and steaks, hot chestnuts, coffee and tea specialties, Eggnog, mulled wine, schnapps, Feuerzangenbowle, dried fruit, roasted almonds, stollen, fruit bread, glazed fruits and delicious confectionery.

Everyone will be fed up!!!!!!!

Or he goes across Odeonsplatz into Briennerstrasse and in three minutes is in the Middle Ages at the Christmas market on Wittelspacher Platz

Munich: Marienplatz - Christmas market

Munich: Christmas market on Marienplatz

The large fir tree in front of the town hall and the lively hustle and bustle of the stand operators awaken the anticipation of the pre-Christmas state capital with mulled wine, Krampus run and Christmas crafts

Christmas market on Marienplatz from Monday, November 25th to Tuesday, December 24th, 2024 (see opening times and program below)

Munich. The wind is currently whistling around the house. I sit at the computer and look out. The snow remains on roofs and trees and somehow you feel like visiting the Christmas market. You can write about the big, beautiful Christmas tree and the preparations on Munich's Marienplatz. - FYI: The winter magic at the Viktualienmarkt has already begun (November 22, 2024 to January 4, 2025). - The Munich Christmas tree at Marienplatz stood in the municipality of Antdorf for 44 years, measured around 23 meters and stood in the hamlet of Breunetsried - the felling was important because the tree stood between two buildings. So our tree still has a great meaning! The highlight is traditionally the lighting of the tree to mark the opening of the Christmas market. The official lighting will take place on Monday at 5 p.m. From November 25, 2024, this beautiful Christmas tree from the Bavarian Oberland will shine above the Christmas market at Marienplatz. The Munich Christmas trees on Marienplatz have traditionally been donated by Bavarian communities since 1977.  The communities' waiting list for a Christmas tree donation is very long. Thanks from the Bavarian state capital: The donor towns are allowed to set up a stand at the Munich Christmas market in the magnificent courtyard of the town hall and, for example, to present themselves here as a tourist destination. By the way, the trees can also be donated from Italy or Austria.

The landmark of the Christmas market at Marienplatz this year is the 44-year-old coastal fir tree from the community of Antdorf, which has 1,400 inhabitants, photo: Waess (November 21, 2024)

Where does the Munich Christmas tree in front of the New Town Hall come from?

This year the Christmas tree was donated by the community of Antdorf in the Weilheim-Schongau district. The over 200 fairy lights with over 3000 LEDs will shine on Monday at 5 p.m. when Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter officially opens the central Christmas market. The Christmas tree will delight visitors on Marienplatz until January 9, 2025. This is where Munich residents and their guests meet at the foot of the town hall, where they can chat comfortably over mulled wine, hot chocolate or delicious Bavarian delicacies.

The stands are currently being festively decorated, photo: Waess,  Nov. 21, 2024

Mulled wine stand of the donor community: Antdorf in the inner courtyard of the new town hall

In the inner courtyard of the town hall - passage under the large music box - 12 local clubs from the municipality of Antdorf will be running a mulled wine stand in the town hall courtyard throughout Advent (until December 23rd). In addition to mulled wine, you can also enjoy other hot drinks and culinary Bavarian "snacks" - including ham and cheese sticks or nut plaits.

Behind the Christmas tree on the right is the entrance to the town hall courtyard with the nativity scene and the stand from the municipality of Antdorf,  photo: Waess ( Nov. 21, 2024)

We were there yesterday and felt the anticipation of the stand operators as they decorated their stalls at the Christmas market with Christmas decorations and various gift ideas. This beautifully located Christmas market between the old and new town halls with the Marian column and a view of the Frauenkirche towers has a long tradition: a Munich Christmas market has been passed down in writings from the 14th century.

Kripperlmarkt is set up in front of the Old Peter, photo: Waess (November 21, 2024)

Around the Munich Christmas Market 2024 - Christmas carols and Krampus run

The tree will light up every day from 4 p.m. Traditionally, the Christmas program includes music from the town hall balcony, choirs singing and the Krampus Run contributing to the winter fun. This year, 25 guest groups are invited to the Krampus Run, which is again organized by the Sparifankerl-Pass group. The date for the Krampuslauf 2024 is Sunday, December 8th, 2024 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Munich.

The program at the Munich Christmas market is very entertaining for young and old

Winter wonderland in the Autostadt Wolfsburg

Autostadt Wolfsburg: winter wonderland

The winter wonderland starts next month in the Autostadt!

Winter magic from November 29th to January 5th, 2025 in the Autostadt Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg.
Next month is November! A time when it becomes cozy and magical winter landscapes invite visitors - at least in Wolfsburg. You can go ice skating on a huge 4,000 square meter ice rink and then go to the ice disco in the evening.  And then there is the 1,100 square meter snow world, which invites you to toboggan and build snowmen. The children's carousel and the chain plane await the little ones and the crime story readings with actor Roland Kalweit are waiting for the older ones.

Winter world - Photo: Helga Waess (archive)

The chairman of the Autostadt management board, Armin Maus, puts it in a nutshell:

“The Autostadt is always worth a trip – especially in the cold season. Embedded in a magical winter landscape, glittering lights and a multitude of winter market stalls create an atmosphere that invites you to end the year in a relaxed atmosphere - and to start the new year as well ... "

Winter feel-good moments: market stalls, ice skating and social gatherings

  •     Stalls with handmade crafts and small souvenirs, but also Christmas items, accessories and toys
  •     Gourmet stands with punch, Kaiserschmarrn, waffles and almonds, cheese spaetzle or spit roast
  •      Hut magic right on the ice surface
  •      XXL hut with Feuerzangenbowle
  •     and après-ski hits
  •     ...
Chimneys of the Volkswagen power plant, photo: Helga Waess (archive)

There is a lot of variety in the 1,100 square meter snow world for children aged four to twelve

  •     Tobogganing, building snowmen, the historic carousel and the chain flyer are on offer and ensure lots of fun.
  •     The highlights of the winter wonderland will conjure up sparkling eyes with a 40 kilometer long chain of lights that illuminates the trees and hedges.
  •     The chimneys of the Volkswagen power plant become Advent candles.
  •     And an illuminated Santa Claus sculpture on the Mittelland Canal greets you from afar from the piazza.

The popular crime entertainment “Crime Time”

CRIME TIME has been an integral part of the winter program in the winter world for over two decades. The literary experience has a new stage in the Panorama Cinema, where Roland Kalweit unpacks crime novels from world literature and is supported by “outstanding actresses and actors” (as the organizers announced).
