Exhibition: Warhol in the Brandhorst Museum - Munich

 Exhibition tip: until July 14, 2024 in the Brandhorst Museum “From Andy Warhol to Kara Walker”

FROM ANDY WARHOL TO KARA WALKER. SCENES FROM THE BRANDHORST COLLECTION - in the Munich art area

 Exhibition until JULY 14, 2024 at the Museum Brandhorst in Munich (on the ground floor of the museum)

Munich. Andy Warhol and Alex Katz and Jean-Michel Basquiat enter into a dialogue of works of art and then other top-class artists join in and show the visitor an action-packed time of creating art. The current exhibition at the Brandhorst Museum in Munich brings together the classics from the collection and spectacular new acquisitions from recent years. New and presented in the museum for the first time are the works of Jana Euler, Keith Haring, Louise Lawler, Pope.L, Kara Walker and several others. The master of self-portrayal Andy Warhol is at the beginning and center of the exhibition and his fascination with portraits amazes us: since the 1960s, his screen prints and paintings with world-famous people such as Jackie Kennedy, Mick Jagger, Elvis Presley and Liz Taylor have dominated. Always in super bright colors and of course in strong poses. Warhol always captures the tragedy of humanity, for example when he immortalized Marilyn Monroe in his painting “Round Marilyn” (1962) shortly after her death. The colorful image has long been an icon in Warhol's work.

And how did other artists see and see the acting icon Marilyn Monroe?

The exhibition shows that other artists also address isolation and loneliness despite all the glamour:

  •     Richard Avedon is at an official photo shoot and looks the real, sad Marilyn in the face - behind the glamorous facade, so to speak
    Keith Haring changes Monroe's portrait into a grimace.
    Sturtevant finds a deep black for the portrait of Monroe.
    Louise Lawler took a photo of Warhol's "Round Marilyn" in 1988. It was offered at an auction house with a price tag. The view of works of art and the mixture of prestige and capital are thereby addressed.

Art can touch us, outrage us, delight us

You doubt, dream, are surprised or amazed. The aim of the exhibition with works from the Brandhorst Collection seems to ask questions.

In other exhibition rooms we find monographic presentations with thematic focuse

  •  The works of Alex Katz, Sturtevant and Jana Euler reflect on strategies of self-expression;
  •  Robert Gober, Arthur Jafa, Louise Lawler and Bruce Nauman make open and hidden violence visible;
  •  Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mike Kelley, Pope.L, Raymond Saunders and Kara Walker take a look at racism and social injustice,
  •  and Thomas Eggerer, Jacqueline Humphries and Sigmar Polke reflect on the forms of political protest.

Many artists' voices have their say in the exhibition

Works of art that show the realities of life and perspectives and ask the viewer to take a position.

I believe... that art transforms the everyday into new rituals and thus gives us a fresh perspective on our lives. This knowledge gives vitality and strength to change the world.”

 - as the American artist Pope.L aptly put it.

The exhibition promises excitement and insight. It was curated by Achim Hochdörfer, Giampaolo Bianconi, Franziska Linhardt and Estelle Vallender
