Exhibition tip: Sprengel Museum Hannover

Hanover Lower Saxony - exhibition tip for photographic art by Barbara Probst

Barbara Probst "SUBJECTIVE EVIDENCE" - a sculptor models with the camera and creates new levels of perception

Sprengel Museum Hannover - photography exhibition by Barbara Probst from December 11th, 2024 to March 9th, 2025

Hanover. Her photos show, like classical sculptures, different perspectives and levels of perception. While the viewer usually wanders around a sculpture in order to grasp it as a whole, Barbara Probst's photographs take over the viewer's movement and show a motif from many sides. The photographing sculptor makes it easy for the art viewer: they can train their perception of art and experience new ways of seeing in the form archived in the photo. But: in the photo he only has a preselection of the viewer in front of him. A perspective that the artist provides. The exhibition “Subjective Evidence” by the photographer Barbara Probst was created in cooperation with the Kunstmuseum Lucerne, the Contemporary Arts Center from Ohio and the Sprengel Museum Hannover.

The artist Barbara Probst

She was born in Munich in 1964. From 1984 to 1990 she studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, and the Düsseldorf Art Academy.

As a photographer, Probst has earned an international reputation in art with her post-conceptual photography. Her photography series introduce new perspectives and play with the perception of reality within the photographic image. In photographs taken at the same time, the same rooms and scenes are shown from ever new perspectives.

Barbara Probst appears to be playing with the strategies of representation. Apparently trivial motifs such as a taxi or an apple are seen in a new way in multi-faceted representations and perspectives.

The artist lives and works in New York and Munich.

The exhibition title “Subjective Evidence” highlights the central theme of Probst’s approach

It's about the subjectivity of perception. In exciting dramaturgies, the artist reminds us that photography does not reflect objective reality, but always purely subjective perceptions that are inspired by the image and selected by the photographer.

Probst questions the “objectivity” of photography and points to a critical path to reflecting on the medium in our time.

Her series of images create a sequence of reality. We are reminded of different photographic genres. The exhibition is therefore also a journey through portrait photography, traditional still life, classic landscape photography and professional studio photography or practical photography.

Barbara Probst plans her serial works elaborately using graphic sketches

Before the photo comes the thought, the drawing, the plan and the selection of subject, light and location. Everyone sees the same scenes differently and - depending on their level of experience - perceives them differently. Probst photographs show the simultaneity of perspectives, which are visualized with technical precision.

Probst's conceptual approach and those hyper-staged realities have an aesthetically independent effect on the viewer and challenge playful, intellectual perception.

Her works stand between the complexity of perception, the relativity of "reality" and the actual form of the object in the subjective reality of photography.

Munich: Art Nouveau. Made in Munich - Kunsthalle until March 23, 2025

CURRENT EXHIBITION IN MUNICH: Art Nouveau. Made in Munich - from October 25th at the Kunsthalle Munich

Around 1900, Munich artists created a new era in art history: Art Nouveau - CURRENT EXHIBITION

Exhibition: Art Nouveau. Made in Munich from October 25th, 2024 – March 23rd, 2025 - Kunsthalle Munich (GERMAN)

Munich. Around 1900, artists opened a new era in art history: Art Nouveau. The Art Nouveau exhibition. Made in Munich (from October 25th, 2024 to March 23rd, 2025) shows how young visionary artists from Munich revolutionized the art of their time. Important objects and artifacts from the collection of the Munich City Museum in the Kunsthalle Munich. It was a phase of rapid scientific and technical innovations and profound social upheavals in Munich. People were looking for a new way of life. Historical models seemed antiquated and no longer fit into this emerging phase of young artists and visionaries in literature. A new artistic language was needed. Numerous new ideas and colorful designs created a spontaneous basis for the art and design of the so-called “modern”.  The magazine JUGEND was created and gave its name to this era!

The exhibition on youth style in the Kunsthalle Munich

The exhibition in the Kunsthalle takes up craftsmanship, the language of sculpture, the new expression in painting and graphics, and even in photography, the medium that shapes and dominates our time today and has shaped some icons of photo art. Added to this are the fashion and jewelry creations from around 1900, which document Munich's role as a "cradle of Art Nouveau in Germany".

Art Nouveau also overcame the late Baroque style of the Asam Brothers, which shaped the cityscape of Munich for a long time! Here is the house facade of the Asamhaus in Sendlingerstrasse - home of the painters Cosmas Damian (master builder) and Egid Quirin Asam (plasterer) - was built between 1733 and 1734 in Munich, photo: Helga Waess

The ideas and designs, together with the works of art - a total of over 400 objects from painting, graphics, sculpture, photography, design and fashion - document Munich's role in the era and as the so-called cradle of Art Nouveau in Germany

At the end of the 19th century, artists across Europe were innovating. From 1896 onwards there was the magazine Jugend, whose program shed current and critical light on all areas of life. She became the namesake of the movement that described Art Nouveau.

The covers of the magazines are still collector's items today.

Names like Richard Riemerschmid, Bruno Paul and Hans Christiansen dictated their style.

Art Nouveau was not only known as an artistic movement. The big questions of the time were addressed in an aesthetic way.

Munich's art and culture scene made the city shine

The Long Night of the Munich Museums, the Munich Highlights, an art fair of international superlatives and the Residence Week made the last weekend a golden October weekend. Overall, an extraordinary festival of art was celebrated.

At the HIGHLIGHS art fair we saw David Yarrow, Helmut Newton, Douglas Kirkland, Markus Klinko and other icons of photo art at the exhibition stand of the Stephen Hoffman Gallery - Fine Art Photography -, we can find the gallery in Munich at Prannerstrasse 5 (back of the Hotel Bayerischer Hof) - Photo: at the 15th Highlights 2024, Helga Waess (press archive)

The Munich art and culture scene breathed PURE ART this weekend!

Over 100 museums and special places opened their doors. The day and night belonged to art! Those works that allow us to breathe deeper and not only impress, but make life more beautiful. Atmospherically lit museums and magnificent art presentations became a magnet for the public and, here and there, for collectors.

“The 25th Long Night of Museums has once again transformed the city into a large, fascinating cultural world. The mix of large, well-known institutions and hidden places creates unique moments every year,” said David Boppert, Managing Director of Münchner Kultur GmbH. “This anniversary was a special experience that impressively showcased the diversity and liveliness of culture in Munich.” = in German:

In addition to the tower tour in the German Museum, it was also the reopened State Archaeological Collection, the new fire brigade exhibition and of course the Bavarian State Collections in the art area that made the night short.
