Josephine Baker has inspired the art scene since the 1920s

The exhibition in the Neue Nationalgalerie shows Josephine Baker sensual, dramatic and always full of humor. Her self-staging did not fail to have an artistic impact and was one of her strategies for success. Born in America, Baker also performed in Paris in the 1920s. In 1937 she took French citizenship.

Josephine Baker enchanted her audience as a superstar

The exhibition looks at the cinema as a medium that suddenly made a face internationally famous and expands on their artistic development right up to the revue star.
Josephine Baker was the first African-American woman to play a leading role in a film and impressed with her authenticity.

The exhibition was created especially for Berlin by Klaus Biesenbach, director of the Neue Nationalgalerie, by Terri Francis, professor of film art at the University of Miami, and by Mona Horncastle, curator of the exhibition “Josephine Baker. Freedom – Equality – Humanity” in the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn.

In Mies van der Rohe's museum building, this complex presentation of a star of film history becomes a fine art viewing experience.
