Munich. Salvatorprobe on March 12, 2025 at Munich's Nockherberg

"Salvatorprobe" on Wednesday, March 12, 2025 - start of the strong beer season at Munich's Nockherberg

The Paulaner brewery is starting the strong beer festival at Nockherberg with a Lenten speech and a musical, the "Derblecken"

Wednesday, March 12, 2025 - Salvatorprobe: Munich's Nockherberg is calling! (Deutsch)

Munich. Salvatorprobe on March 12, 2025 at Munich's Nockherberg. A must for every visitor to Munich before Easter!!! "Liquida non frangunt ieiunium" ("Liquids do not break the fast") !!! The Salvatorprobe fan community at Munich's Nockherberg is eagerly awaiting the Salvatorbier 2025 and the monk's Lenten speech - this year it will be Maxi Schafroth again. Salvator tasting ceremony: Traditionally, the head of the Paulaner brewery will tap the first barrel and present the first liter of Salbator beer to the Bavarian Prime Minister Dr. Markus Söder.

This is the starting signal for the original Bavarian "Derblecken". Yes, the Bavarians have a sense of humor - and plenty of it. In the old fashioned way, the Bavarian satire tradition - the DERBLECKEN - is maintained on the famous "Berg" (the nickname of the Nockherberg). While the politicians enrich the audience, they are humorously "taken to task" from the pulpit.

Original strong beer festival in the Paulaner at Nockherberg

The monk traditionally begins with his Lenten speech, where the cabaret artist Maxi Schafroth will stand in the pulpit. This is followed by musical plays and parodies of the politicians by their doubles. SALVATOR beer is known as the forefather of strong beers

The brewers show off their skills with the freshly brewed strong beer of each vintage. The high alcohol content is responsible for the strong taste every year. This year, the original wort is 18.3 percent and - note! - ... and at least 7.9 percent alcohol. The whole thing then has a malty, balanced sweetness and a caramel-colored head.

A quick definition: strong beers are both Bock and Doppelbock beers.

Originally, these "fasting beers" of the monks were intended for the high-calorie diet during Lent:

after one Maß you were full, so to speak - two were/are too many!

The strong beer season here in Munich starts after Ash Wednesday and lasts until Easter.

The strong beer is brewed in all breweries in the autumn, then everything can mature over the winter.

The Paulaner monks began to change the recipe for the Maibock in 1629 and invented the strong Doppelbock

The first strong beer was called "Saint Father" by the monks in the 17th century, which later became "Salvator". During Lent, many Munich residents would make pilgrimages to drink beer in the Paulaner monastery.

The public serving of "Paulaner strong beer" was then approved by Elector Karl Theodor in the late 18th century.

The strong beer period was intended to make the official fasting period easier for the monks. The monastery rule

"Liquida non frangunt ieiunium" ("Liquids do not break the fast")

allowed liquid, nutritious food.

High original wort content was high in calories and filling!!!
