Munich Tip: Grand ceremonial cannon firing beneath the Bavaria statue

A traditional ceremonial cannon firing (using black powder) concludes the 191st Munich Oktoberfest 2026 this weekend.

Sunday, October 4, from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM: The ceremonial cannon firing, the honoring of the state marksmen kings and queens, and the singing of the Bavarian anthem will take place on the steps leading up to the Bavaria statue (English, Deutsch, Italiano)

Munich – Theresienwiese. Amidst all the festivities, many Oktoberfest visitors may not have realized that the grand Oktoberfest state marksmen competition was taking place. To mark the close of the Oktoberfest, around 60 marksmen and markswomen dressed in traditional costumes will assemble on the steps of the Bavaria statue starting at 12:00 PM to bid farewell to this year's festival. Accompanied by brass band music, the state marksmen kings will first be honored. The final day of the Oktoberfest is then traditionally celebrated with loud salute shots—fired from ceremonial cannons—and the singing of the Bavarian anthem. During the firing, only black powder is discharged into the air, enveloping the Bavaria statue in rising white smoke. Everyone is welcome to watch; the event is free of charge, though hearing protection is recommended for those sensitive to loud noise.

The campsite at the Munich exhibition grounds is open ONLY from September 16 to October 5, 2026

... meaning during the period surrounding Oktoberfest, which begins on September 19 and concludes on October 4, 2026, with the traditional salute by the gunner clubs (*Böllerschützen*). The camping area, spanning approximately 150,000 m², offers pitches for 1,500 motorhomes. Of these, 800 pitches are equipped with on-site electricity connections.

We recommend the Oktoberfest campsite, as it offers an affordable way to enjoy your Oktoberfest visit in a relaxed atmosphere.

Motorhomes, VW buses (from the T1 model onwards ;-)), and caravans—as well as all camping enthusiasts—will find a fully equipped site here, including sanitary facilities, a souvenir shop, a restaurant, and a bistro.

Munich. Just 18 days remain until the grand 191st Munich Oktoberfest begins on the Theresienwiese. Traditional costume groups are already looking forward to the parade to the "Wiesn," as locals call the festival. The event speaks to the very soul of Munich's residents; every year, people look forward to it, bringing out their *Lederhosen* and *Dirndls* and practicing with their clubs and music bands. On the first Saturday of the festival, the tents open at 9:00 a.m., with non-alcoholic beverages (excluding beer) available from 10:00 a.m. Beer service begins at 12:00 noon, when Munich Mayor Dominik Krause makes the announcement: "Ozapft is!" (It's tapped!). Once the beer starts flowing, Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder is presented with the first *Maß* (liter mug of beer).

With the ceremonial tapping of the first keg on September 19 at 12:00 p.m., the festival is officially declared open!
