Exhibition Tip: "Karl Valentin and the Old Knights" - Grünwald Castle
Visit "Karl Valentin and the Old Knights" at the medieval Grünwald Castle south of Munich... "Yes, that's how the old knights were."
March to November 15, 2026 - An exhibition by the Forum for Humor and Comic Art and the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection at Grünwald Castle Museum (ENGLISH, ITALIANO, FRANÇAIS, DEUTSCH)
Munich – Grünwald. The medieval Grünwald Castle is located south of Munich and was first documented in the 13th century as a defensive structure of the Bavarian dukes. Centuries later, Karl Valentin, then "castle steward," found his inspiration here for songs and films about knighthood. Today, the castle houses a museum of regional history and archaeology, exhibiting medieval weapons and suits of armor, as well as castle models from various centuries and regional archaeological finds. The exhibition "Karl Valentin and the Old Knights" takes its name and fascinating content from Valentin's time at the castle and his satirical song "Yes, that's how they were, the old knights." The Forum for Humor and Comic Art and the State Archaeological Collection invite you to view the humorist's retreat with fresh eyes through this exhibition and its excellent accompanying program. Exhibition tip: Munich's medieval castle in the south of the city!

Since 1914, knights have enlivened and inspired Valentin's plays
- In 1924, the two-act play "Robber Knights Before Munich" was written.
- In 1934, Valentin opened his "Medieval Horror Cellar" in the cellar of the Hotel Wagner on Sonnenstraße.
- From 1934 to 1937, he wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of "Robber Knights."
- In 1939, he established the "Knights' Tavern" at Färbergraben 33.
... You will learn this and much more in the exhibition. Furthermore, the accompanying program brings the age of knights to life in Valentin's films...
