Berlin. It will be another highlight exhibition when the group exhibition “Berlin, Berlin!” opened in the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin on June 6th, 2024. With this exhibition, the great photographer's foundation is also celebrating its 20th anniversary. On the anniversary of Helmut Newton's death on January 23, 2024, the foundation gave the exhibition title "Berlin, Berlin!" known. With his foundation, Helmut Newton (1920 in Berlin - 2004 in Los Angeles, USA) had created a monument to himself and his work. As early as fall 2003, Newton planned to bring large parts of his personal archive to his hometown. He founded the Helmut Newton Stiftung/Helmut Newton Foundation in 2004 and located it in the former “Landwehr Casino”, directly at the Zoological Garden train station. In the anniversary exhibition group exhibition "Berlin, Berlin!", which opens on June 6, 2024, some of his earliest sources of inspiration will be on display alongside Helmut Newton's Berlin pictures. In terms of content, the curators of the exhibition cover a wide range of photography history, extending into Berlin's current image production. Since its founding, the Helmut Newton Foundation, together with the art library, has used this historic house under the name "Museum for Photography"


After the death of Newton's wife June, the complete works of the two photographers and all existing archival materials were permanently housed in the foundation's archive - which also manages the image rights of both artists. The Australian photographer June Newton (1923 in Melbourne - 2021 Monte-Carlo) chose the pseudonym Alice Springs for her photographic career.

Escape from Berlin and return after 65 years

 

 The Zoological Garden train station was the last thing 18-year-old Helmut Newton saw of Berlin in December 1938 when he fled and set off for Singapore. After 65 years, the famous and globally revered photographer, who created unique works of photography, returned to Berlin for the first time. The young man had previously completed his photography training in Berlin-Charlottenburg from 1936 to 1938. The legendary photographer Else Ernestine Neuländer-Simon, known as Yva (1900-1944), trained him in the genres of portrait, fashion and nude in her studio, which was to shape Newton's photographic path.

In the summer of 2024, the Helmut Newton Foundation will celebrate its 20th anniversary

The Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin is dedicated to the processing and presentation of the photographic work of Helmut and June Newton - who also left behind an important work in photographic history under the pseudonym Alice Springs.


Exhibitions take place every six months at the Berlin Foundation and are loaned to renowned museums and institutions worldwide - including museums in 

Amsterdam (Foam), Budapest (Museum of Fine Arts), Genoa (Palazzo Ducale), Houston (Museum of Fine Arts), Milan (Palazzo Reale), Munich (Hypo-Kunsthalle), Paris (Grand Palais), Rome (Palazzo delle Espositioni), Stockholm (Fotografiska), Venice (Tre Oci), Montreal (Museum of Fine Arts) or recently also in A Coruña (MOP Foundation).

Helmut Newton is compared to other renowned photographers in the exhibitions

In dialogue between the works of Helmut Newton and the visual language of photographers such as David Lachapelle and James Nachtwey, with Larry Clark and Ralph Gibson, with Greg Gorman and Frank Horvat, with Mario Testino and Guy Bourdin, with Sarah Moon and Paolo Roversi, with David Lynch and Saul Leiter, with Vanessa Beecroft and Cindy Sherman, with Jürgen Klauke and Viviane Sassen, the photographer Newton remains in the context of current events and his imagery remains in conversation with contemporary photographers.

Ankündigung einer Helmut Newton-Ausstellung am 20. Todestag Helmut Newton

Berlin. Es wird wieder eine Highlight-Ausstellung, wenn die Gruppenausstellung "Berlin, Berlin!" in der Helmut Newton Stiftung in Berlin am 06. Juni 2024 eröffnet. Mit dieser Ausstellung feiert die Stiftung des großen Fotografen gleichzeitig ihr 20jähriges Jubiläum. Zum Todestag Helmut Newtons am 23. Januar 2024 gab die Stiftung den Ausstellungstitel "Berlin, Berlin!" bekannt. Mit seiner Stiftung hatte Helmut Newton (1920 in Berlin – 2004 in Los Angeles, USA) sich und seiner Arbeit gleichsam ein Denkmal gesetzt. Bereits im Herbst 2003 plante Newton große Teile seines persönlichen Archivs in seine Heimatstadt zu bringen. Er gründete 2004 die Helmut Newton Stiftung/Helmut Newton Foundation und lokalisierte sie im einstigen „Landwehrkasino“, direkt am Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten. In der Jubiläumsausstellung Gruppenausstellung "Berlin, Berlin!", die am 6. Juni 2024 eröffnet wird, werden neben Helmut Newtons Berlin-Bildern auch einige seiner frühsten Inspirationsquellen zu sehen sein. Inhaltlich schlagen die Kuratoren der Ausstellung einen weiten Bogen der Fotografie-Geschichte auf, die bis in die aktuelle Bildproduktion Berlins reicht. Nach dem Tod von Newtons Ehefrau June wurden die Gesamtwerke der beiden Fotografen und alle vorhandenen Archivalien dauerhaft im Stiftungsarchiv untergebracht – die auch die Bildrechte beider Künstler verwaltet. Die australische Fotografin June Newton (1923 in Melbourne - 2021 Monte-Carlo) hatte für ihre fotografische Karriere das Pseudonym Alice Springs gewählt.

Flucht aus Berlin und Rückkehr nach 65 Jahren

Der Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten war das letzte was der 18-jährige Helmut Newton einst im Dezember 1938 von Berlin sah, als er flüchtete und in in Richtung Singapur startete. Nach 65 Jahren kehrte der berühmte und weltweit verehrte Fotograf, der einmalige Werke der Fotografie geschaffen hatte erstmals nach Berlin zurück. In Berlin-Charlottenburg hatte der junge Mann zuvor von 1936 bis 1938 seine Fotografenausbildung absolviert. Die legendäre Fotografin Else Ernestine Neuländer-Simon, genannt Yva (1900-1944) hatte ihn in ihrem Atelier in den Genres Porträt, Mode und Akt ausgebildet, was Newtons fotografischen Weg prägen sollte.

Er wurde 83 Jahre alt. 20 Jahre nach seinem Tod bereitet die Stiftung für diesen großen Ausnahmekünstler, der in Berlin zu fotografieren begann, eine spannende Ausstellung vor.

In seinen Arbeiten vereinen sich der Blick auf die Realität ebenso wir der Zeitgeist, das Kino und die Inspiration durch die Kunstgeschichte insgesamt.

Die Helmut Newton Stiftung in Berlin widmet sich der Aufarbeitung und Präsentation des fotografischen Werkes von Helmut und June Newton – die unter dem Pseudonym Alice Springs ebenfalls ein bedeutendes Werk der Fotogeschichte hinterlassen hat.
