Book Recommendation: British photographer Terry O’Neill documented the stars of rock history in unique photographs ... - Just over 10 years ago, Terry O’Neill presented his new “Rock’n Roll Album” for the first time in Munich! This took place at the “Galerie Stephen Hoffman - Fine Art Photography” (at Prannerstrasse 5, behind the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich), which still exhibits signed, original photographs by the world-renowned photographer. Terry O’Neill’s intimate chronicle of the Swinging Sixties, thanks to his friendships with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, made him a well-known photographer. He also worked closely with Frank Sinatra for over 30 years. This was followed by very personal photo shoots with AC/DC, the musicians from the Live Aid performance, The Animals, Joan Baez, John Barry, Shirley Bassey, Chuck Berry, Moddy Blues, Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Alice Cooper, Elvis Costello, Genesis, Johnny Hallyday, Elton John, Janis Joplin, and many others.

Terry O’Neill (1938–2019)

He documented the lives of the rock stars of his time in a photo-biographical style. “We were all young, and no one knew if they would ever become famous,” said Terry O’Neill. His photographs appeared on record covers and in magazines and journals. His images became iconic in rock and roll history. Photographs from the 1960s of David Bowie, Elton John, The Who, Eric Clapton, and Chuck Berry shaped the visual memory of that era.

Five decades later, Terry O’Neill graced the covers of Stern, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, GQ, Time, The Sunday Times Magazine, People, Playboy, Paris Match, Look, Vanity Fair, and many others. He also created famous film posters, record covers, and fashion designs for the world’s best designers.

"Terry was everywhere in the '60s - he knew everyone and everything that was happening" -   Keith Richards in this book!

“ROCK 'N' ROLL ALBUM”

In his new book, Terry O'Neill recounts these encounters and presents not only well-known photographs but also very personal snapshots and contact sheets, from which he selected the images for the exhibition. The result is his very personal Rock 'n' Roll Album, which, in the exhibition featuring signed and limited-edition original photographs, allows visitors to feel the close connection Terry O'Neill developed with all his subjects.

TERRY O'NEILL remains friends with many musicians today.

“We've been part of each other's lives, like Paul McCartney, for example. We met when we were very young. I was invited to family gatherings, and they came to visit me. Completely private.”

The exhibition features photographs of the lads from Liverpool. One photo was taken at Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach's wedding reception. "I was a private guest," Terry O'Neill recounts, "but as always, I had my camera with me. It was a lively and wonderful celebration. Then Paul suddenly spotted a piano, sat down at it, and played 'All You Need Is Love!' and all at once we were all singing along. Everyone, even the children. Paul and Linda, Ringo, everyone was singing. The atmosphere was fantastic. That's exactly how it was! A magical moment!" But this photo also reveals more: the sparkle in their eyes and the radiance in the room.

You can sense what these musicians were passionate about and that they and their music possessed iconic status. "It's very personal. Of course, I was also impressed by Mick Jagger. There are so many stories to tell."

The Stephen Hoffman Gallery in Munich's city center presents Terry O'Neill's photographs.

The Stephen Hoffman Gallery worked directly with Terry O'Neill and his management – numerous world-famous, iconic Terry O'Neill photographs, such as those featuring the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, David Bowie, and many others, are regularly exhibited there.

Photographien der 60er Jahre wie David Bowie, Elton John, The Who, Eric Clapton, Chuck Berry prägen das Bildgedächtnis dieser Zeit.

"Terry was everywhere in the '60s - he knew everyone and everything that was happening" - so Keith Richards in dem Bildband

„ROCK’N ROLL ALBUM“
