Munich. Munich has the Theresienwiese with the Bavaria, the town hall square with the Marian column and the Viktualienmarkt with the dancing “market women”.  On March 3rd, 2025, an extraordinary event will take place in the ballroom of the German Theater: The famous dance of the market women, which usually takes place at the Viktulienmarkt, was actually canceled, but today we received a press release from the theater that the twirling ladies from the market will be dancing on stage at the 089 cult carnival party on Rose Monday. In any case, this party is an absolute highlight among the carnival balls every year. The press release read: "After the public carnival activities in the city were largely canceled due to recent events, the traditional dance of the market women on the Viktualienmarkt on Shrove Tuesday will unfortunately also be cancelled. As a small replacement, we have therefore decided to invite the market women to our Deutsches Theater and have them dance on Shrove Monday at the 089 Kult carnival party, which will again be presented by the radio station of the same name."

The 089 cult carnival party on Rose Monday is crowned with another highlight with the DANCE OF THE MARKET WOMEN from the Viktualienmarkt

 
Anyone who attends the ball can see the legendary Standl women from Viktualienmarkt dancing on stage. And here they join the ranks of legendary Munich mood makers like

•     the main act: Spider Murphy Gang - a Munich authority and cult for over 45 years - with “Scandal in the Restricted District”, “Schikeria” and “Summer in the City” they will bring the hall to a boil
•     Cagey Strings - who have been the cult band in the Munich live music scene for forty years -
•     the Isar Indian Willy Michl - a veteran of the local music scene for decades and everyone here knows his anthem “Isarflimmern”.
•     Everyone knows Roland Hefter from the radio station 089 Kult - here he has his own show together with Monika Gruber - he performs with his band Isarrider
•     Los Poppos - the band has been known from Munich clubs and stages for almost 40 years. Once after one of the many performances in the Atomic Café, the Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote: “Los Poppos is a mixture of big band, brass band, honkytonk and gypsy musicians... Los Poppos offer an exuberant, energetic and self-deprecating stage show in which everyone does everything.”

 

The dance of the market women has been around for over 100 years

They danced at their stalls at the Viktualienmarkt until the 1980s. This tradition has been taking place on Shrove Tuesday on a stage in the beer garden of the market in Munich for 25 years. Their costumes are museum-worthy and their appearance is a piece of Munich's cultural history.

“Dance of the market women” (they insist on this choice of words):

 Anyone who has ever seen or experienced the lively women in their colorful robes will be thrilled. The dance of the market women from the Viktualienmarkt has been taking place in Munich for over 100 years. It was brought into being to polish up the reputation of the “grandstanding market women” - at that time and until the 1980s they danced at their market stalls - the honey woman and her colleagues.

This tradition has been continued on a stage on Shrove Tuesday for over 30 years. They perform every year on the last day of Carnival at 10 a.m. Every year. In any weather. Then they float across the stage at the Viktualienmarkt in their colorful costumes, which surprise every year. They dance and laugh their way into the hearts of the audience.

The large "city family" doesn't feel like celebrating after the attack - so all carnival events in the city of Munich have been canceled!

 

... Dance of the Market Women and Street Carnival canceled

Munich. After the "Damic Knights", who canceled the carnival procession for reasons of piety, the city of Munich also canceled all traditional carnival celebrations at the Viktualienmarkt. The “nonsense Thursday” on February 27th and also the famous “Dance of the Market Women” with the subsequent carnival activity on Shrove Tuesday, March 4th, were canceled by the municipal department and the Munich markets. In addition, the “München Narrisch” association will be foregoing the entire, colorful carnival hustle and bustle that was scheduled to take place in the city center from March 2nd to 4th this year. The organizers were preparing and ordering and everything was ready. After the cancellation, these preparations for Carnival 2025 can be seen as sporty and as practice for the Carnival parade in 2026.

Security precautions at carnival parades are being increased throughout Bavaria

Each city will decide for itself whether and how to celebrate. Please consult the local media for this... for example, the carnival parade will take place in Würzburg. For this purpose, extensive and special security measures were taken to protect the participants.

Den Tanz der Marktfrauen gibt es seit über 100 Jahren. Bis in die 1980er Jahre tanzten sie auf dem Viktualienmarkt an ihren Ständen. The royal couple receives the keys to the city in a solemn ceremony. From then on, they will hold over 200 celebration dates and rule until Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2025. In addition to the official carnival prince couple of the state capital Munich, the child and youth prince couple of Narrhalla Johan I & Hannah I. will also be enthroned live at the Rindermarkt in the heart of Munich from 10:30 a.m.

The official carnival prince couple Christian IV & Michaela II of the state capital Munich!

Christian IV. (Christian Deussen) feels at home on stage and writes his own carnival songs such as “We are all human – and 100%” or his song for the coming term “Beste Zeit”, which he will sing live.  Carnival in Munich 2025!

Michaela II (Dr. Michaela Hämmerle) has been dancing with the Narrhalla's Prinzengarde since 2019. She awaits her reign with curiosity.

 

The royal couple receives the key to the city and then they celebrate!

The enthronement is the starting signal for the carnival in Munich, where the carnival prince couple officially receive their insignia for the foolish power, i.e. the cloak, the scepter and the diadem. The most important part of this is the city key, which the city gives out. Afterwards there will be a celebration with the guards and music in the center of Munich until 4 p.m.

Carnival in Munich 2025 - January 11th to March 4th, 2025

 

The Munich carnival is on November 11th. started at 11 a.m. 11 minutes and will enter its funniest phase from January 11, 2025.

And in the next few months there will be the popular carnival procession of the Damian Knights, the colorful street carnival “Munich foolish” and finally, every year, the traditional highlight of the Munich carnival awaits: the “Dance of the Market Women” on Shrove Tuesday, March 4th, 2025. 

During the so-called open-air carnival, “München Narrisch” is celebrated in the city center from February 27th to March 4th on the wildest days in a huge open-air party. Every year the entire pedestrian zone becomes a party zone and people sing, dance and laugh with or without costumes.

Anyone who visits our beautiful city cannot avoid visiting this market for connoisseurs and gourmets. You will find everything here, from white sausage and traditional Bavarian specialties to exotic fruits. This year the Viktualienmarkt is more than just a food market. Characteristic are its market people in the green pavilions, who offer fresh fruit and vegetables from all over the world every day, and the maypole and the cozy beer garden in the heart of the market. There is also a North Sea fishing hall. “A Gaudi on every corner!” is the motto in the so-called living room of the city: the Viktualienmarkt.

The famous maypole towers over all the stalls at the Viktualienmarkt. No Bavarian village without a maypole! ... and the people of Munich often talk about “our village Minga!” The largest Bavarian village got the first maypole of the Viktualienmarkt in 1962 - it is decorated with traditional Munich figure groups: the brewery team, of course the Oktoberfest, the Schäfflertanz, various musicians and dancing couples, a woman at the stall, the beer bar, the Munich city flags and of course the two patron saints of brewers: St. Boniface and St. Florian.

Anyone who strolls through the Viktualienmarkt will not miss its fountain

At the annual fountain festival on the first Friday in August, the fountains are decorated and musicians sing in honor and memory of the originals depicted. They helped shape Munich: the folk singers and comedians to whom a monument was erected here.

• Karl Valentin - Munich comedian and folk singer - together with Liesl Karlstadt, the Musäum im Isartor was dedicated to him

We start early in the morning with breakfast at the Viktualienmarkt

... the market people have already set up their market there. Here and there you get an appetite for croissants, coffee or white sausage with pretzels. You can have breakfast directly at the market or visit one of the surrounding cafés. 

• For example, the “Rischart am Viktualienmarkt – Café am Markt”, which was founded by the Munich baker Rischart, invites you to do so. One of the most beautiful of its cafés is located directly on the Viktualienmarkt and has a beautiful terrace with a view of the market.

• “Schmalznudel – Café Frischhut” invites you to look out from the window with freshly pulled out drinks and Striezerl and is a must for visitors to Munich.

• "Café Nymphenburg Sekt" - no, there is more than sparkling wine here, but a sparkling wine breakfast with freshly squeezed juice is not to be underestimated. You can enjoy the breakfast menu here!

Or straight to the beer garden to have your own snack. Yes, it's true: you can bring your own spices here. Bought in the stand, you sit here and order your drinks. However, the beer garden doesn't open that early ... 

No visit to Munich without a traditional white sausage breakfast!

After all, the Weißwurst is the most famous Munich specialty. You eat them in the morning, before twelve, with sweet mustard, pretzels, Obazda and some wheat beer! By the way, white sausages are not allowed to hear the 12 o'clock chime! Inns with tradition only offer the Weißwurst breakfast until 12 p.m. When you order a white sausage, you always get a pair - so never order two, otherwise you'll just have to eat four.

• By the way: you will immediately be recognized as a stranger if you eat the Weißwurst incorrectly. The white sausages are either zipped and alternatively provided with a cross cut or a longitudinal cut
