Freddie Mercury Receives Commemorative Coin - Occasion: 40 Years of Live Aid

Remembering a Legend: A new Royal Mint coin honors Freddie Mercury on the 40th anniversary of Live Aid – featuring an iconic portrait, his signature, and symbols representing his vocal range – ... and in Munich, you can find photographs of Freddie Mercury and Queen by Peter Hince at the Stephen Hoffman Gallery

On November 24, 1991, the unforgettable music legend Freddie Mercury passed away. Christmas gifts for Freddie Mercury fans: 1 commemorative coin, original photographs, 2 books by Peter Hince (Deutsch)

London - Munich. The British musician Freddie Mercury is being honored with a stunning commemorative coin from the Royal Mint. A large collector's coin bearing his portrait and signature. But that's not all: the edge of the silver coin also features the belt motifs worn by the lead singer of the rock group Queen at the massive Live Aid concert in 1985. He was not just a singer, but a legend in his vocal range, capable of spanning four octaves. This coin would make a nice Christmas present for Freddie Mercury fans. With 320 million records sold, Queen can be considered the most successful rock band of the seventies and eighties. And as is often the case with legends, younger generations are now discovering their iconic music as a timeless rock 'n' roll show. A second Christmas gift idea: In Munich, you can find original photographs of Queen and Freddie Mercury by photographer Peter Hince, who was the band's chief roadie for over ten years and was always there... as he recounts in two books – also great Christmas gifts for Queen fans.

In addition, we would like to mention the iconic original photographs by Peter Hince, who, as chief roadie and photographer from London, traveled with Freddie Mercury and Queen worldwide, including for over 10 years in Munich.

They are available for purchase at the Stephen Hoffman - Fine Art Photography gallery (the link leads to the gallery and the photographs by Peter Hince available there: Homepage der Galerie Stephen Hoffman mit den Fotografien zu Queen und Freddie Mercury) at Prannerstrasse 5 (rear of the Hotel Bayerischer Hof) in Munich.

Photographer Peter Hince lives and works in London. He captured numerous photographs of Queen's frontman, lead singer, and songwriter Freddie Mercury, who, along with Roger Taylor, Brian May, and John Deacon, made rock history—including Freddie Mercury in Munich, where the legendary vocalist happily called home for over 10 years.

Peter Hince traveled from London to Munich for the opening of his exhibition at the Stephen Hoffman Gallery on November 24, 2021.

The chief roadie met with Reinhold Mack, producer at Musicland Studio, and Fritz Egner from Bavarian Broadcasting (Bayerischer Rundfunk). It was a long evening filled with numerous iconic photographs, and Peter Hince reminisced about the old days with Freddie, Roger, Brian, and John in Munich.

From 1979 to 1985, Freddie Mercury (whose real name was Farrokh Bulsara) frequently lived in his Munich apartment, met up with the other members of the band at Reinhold Mack's Musicland Studio, and threw fantastic parties in the clubs and hotels of the Bavarian capital.

Peter Hince spent over ten years in the road crew of the legendary rock band Queen, and as head of the road crew, he even worked personally with Freddie Mercury and John Deacon. The photographs exhibited at the Stephen Hoffman Gallery vividly illustrate Hince's experience of band members Roger Taylor, Brian May, Freddie Mercury, and John Deacon.

The photos document scenes on stage, backstage, and even at Musicland Studios with Reinhold Mack. Freddie sits at the piano, sings with Queen, poses for group portraits, and even holds a bottle of Augustinerbräu beer in the Augustinerkeller beer hall.

The 30th anniversary of Freddie Mercury's death (November 24, 2021) also brought the topic of Queen and Peter Hince's original photographs to the attention of the media.

Freddie Mercury is wearing the signature crown and cape ensemble he wore on stage during the "Magic" tour from June 7 to August 9, 1986. This outfit was designed by Diana Moseley.

This royal attire was worn on stage at the end of all concerts—with the exception of the Slane Castle concert in the Republic of Ireland on July 5, 1986, where Freddie Mercury wore only the crown—when the final song, "God Save the Queen," was performed. Freddie, wearing a crown and robe, is shown as a cardboard cutout in the 1987 video "The Great Pretender".

Diana Moseley designed Freddie's Campest costume, the deep red ermine-trimmed cape and the crown... during the fitting, Freddie threw the coat over his white terrycloth robe and placed the crown on top... the story goes that the Queen singer assumed a majestic posture and his movements were almost courtly. Since there was no microphone, he sang into a banana and experimented with how the coat moved. He had found his outfit, and as the King of Queen, he wore it with dignity.

BOOK I - Peter Hince describes his time as the rock group's chief roadie in his book

"Queen - Intimate. Groupies, Gin and Glitter - On Tour with Queen", Hannibal Verlag, Höfen 2015, ISBN 978-3-85445-490-8 - "Outbursts of anger and guitar swapping: This is what it was really like on tour with Queen. For over ten years, Peter Hince traveled the world with Queen and experienced exactly what many rock fans dream of: sex, drugs & rock 'n' roll. Above all, he experienced one of the most legendary rock bands not only on stage, but also behind the scenes, and got up close to one of the biggest stars in rock: As head of the road crew, he was responsible for ensuring that Freddie Mercury could deliver the phenomenal performances for which he is still remembered today – and this included not only technical, but often also psychological support. And so Hince was present at many historic moments, for example, when Freddie “Crazy Little Thing Of Love” was composed – in the bathtub of his suite at the Munich Hilton Hotel.” (See publisher, cover and content)
