Hanover. Christmas is in the air when the Courtyard of Honor at Herrenhausen Palace in Hanover is illuminated for Winter Magic. Strings of lights and decorated Christmas trees are everywhere, even at the end of October. Yes, you heard right! If you can't wait any longer, hop on the ICE train and head to Hanover to enjoy the aroma of gingerbread and hot punch at Herrenhausen Palace, the adjacent Gallery, and the avenue. The train from Munich takes just over 4 hours. The gallery and the orangery provide a magical backdrop for the pre-Christmas stalls. The nostalgic carousel and several stilt walkers will delight young and old alike.

Starting Wednesday, October 19, 2025, around 130 exhibitors will be welcoming visitors.

Winter Magic promises delights and a fantastic culinary selection in front of the castle:

• finest almond nougat,
• winter stollen,
• doughnuts,
• fresh Baumkuchen (tree cake),
• roasted chestnuts,
• delicious wild boar burgers,
• raclette specialties,
• Finnish flame-grilled salmon,
• mulled wine,
• apple punch, coffee, hot chocolate, and teas are all available.

The wait for Christmas is already getting romantic in Hanover

The castle's courtyard, the gallery, and the magnificent avenue will be transformed into a fairytale setting for a pre-Christmas market.

Everything that warms and delights body and soul during the cold season will be offered here starting October 29:

• mulled wine, cookies, handicrafts, Christmas decorations, and wonderful gifts for a cozy home.

As a special highlight, the Great Garden will be open free of charge

•  from 4:30 pm for all Winter Magic visitors with a Winter Magic ticket.

In the evening twilight, which, thanks to the time change, now falls as early as 5 pm, the Great Baroque Garden will be romantically illuminated.

The exhibition "Art Nouveau. Made in Munich" presents in ten chapters the groundbreaking ideas and sources of inspiration from which the artists trained or working in Munich developed their respective styles

 

"Art Nouveau. Made in Munich" until March 23, 2025 in the Hypo-Kulturstiftung art gallery in the heart of Munich

 

Munich. We recommend to all visitors to the Bavarian capital the exhibition "Art Nouveau. Made in Munich" in the Kunsthalle Munich. When strolling from Marienplatz towards Odeonsplatz, you pass the Kunsthalle and should take the time to experience art: Anyone who goes to the Kunsthalle these days will enter the world around 1900 and experience how "young visionary artists in Munich" began traditional art to turn it upside down. At that time it was a time of scientific and technical innovations and society was in upheaval. The way of life differed from historical models, which the artists were the first to feel, feel and visualize with their own means. The new ideas of modern art and design are on display. Handicrafts, but also sculpture and especially painting and graphics, brought new visual worlds into everyday life. Photography showed a new reality. And new, partly floral, trends also emerged in the world of fashion and jewelry. The exhibition clearly shows the role of the city and the artists of Munich as a "cradle of Art Nouveau in Germany". The exhibition was curated together with the Munich City Museum. Daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Kunsthalle Munich.

Munich as the earliest, most important center of Art Nouveau in Germany

 The first German Secession was founded in 1892 and four years later the first magazines appeared that brought the new era to the public in a readable way.

The "Simplicissimus" and the magazine "Jugend", which ultimately gave the new art movement its name, were written and illustrated by young and visionary artists. Printmaking ensures that new ideas and visions are spread widely. Munich became a cosmopolitan cultural metropolis and at the end of the 19th century artists came to study and live in the Bavarian capital.

 

Works by Richard Riemerschmid (1868-1957), Bruno Paul (1874-1968) and Hans Christiansen (1866-1945) show that Art Nouveau was versatile and that artistic freedom interpreted all questions of the time "Made in Munich".

 The interiors of the salons and dining rooms show how a lifestyle was visualized in the sense of a total work of art.

At the VII International Art Exhibition in the former Glass Palace, a separate section was dedicated to cabaret for the first time. Works by Otto Eckmann (1865–1902), August Endell (1871–1925) and Bernhard Pankok (1872–1943), which presented modern decorative arts, were shown. Furniture, textiles, everyday objects, paintings and graphics that surrounded the life of the time are shown.

 

The Kunsthalle Munich is one of the most renowned exhibition venues in Germany

It is located in downtown Munich between Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz in the Fünf Höfe on Theatinerstrasse. It has around 350,000 visitors every year. Every year, three large exhibitions on around 1,200 m² of exhibition space are presented in the beautiful exhibition halls.  These show works of art from different genres such as painting, sculpture, graphics, photography, handicrafts, design and even fashion.
