Automotive history: the VW Beetle as a classic car, a hit with a boxer engine

Wolfsburg - Munich - Herford. Beetle! In 70 years, a total of 22 million vehicles were produced from the VW Beetle, which was actually called the VW 1200 and VW 1300. Enthusiasts and fans have all Beetle models to this day. We can't go into the whole VW Beetle story here, just this much about its origins: The Volkswagen from 1935 had a whopping 22.5 hp and an air-cooled boxer engine. The boxer remained, only the horsepower increased a little ;-)) : a maximum of 50 hp. This weekend (January 11th and 12th, 2025) was the VW Beetle and veterans winter meeting at the freight station in Herford. For us, this is an opportunity to remember legendary Beetle models, because anyone who has ever driven a Beetle knows: “Love runs through the car”. For example, there was the Hebmüller Beetle convertible from 1949, which was built in 696 units. Another unique Beetle was the Stoll Beetle Coupé from 1952, which was built as a one-off edition 1 of 1. These variants can only be found in the museum. Their rarity and special bodies turned some unconventional models into high-quality collector's specimens and wrote VW history. By the way, the “Zeithaus” at the Autostadt in Wolfsburg (open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) has some on display and is always worth a visit! There was even a beetle nicknamed the "Millionaire"!

It made company history because its outer skin was made of gold-colored paint, the bumpers were decorated with rhinestones and the interior was stylishly lined with brocade fabric for My Lady.

The Beetle was VW's successful car and in 1955 the millionth Volkswagen rolled off the assembly line here

Yes, you read that right. A nickname was also given to the “World Champion Beetle,” which rolled off the assembly line here on February 17, 1972 as the 15,007,034th Beetle. With these numbers, Volkswagen easily beat the production monster Ford from Detroit with its American T models.

Convertible history was made with the “Sliced ​​Beetle” from 1947

The roof of the VW 1200 Beetle Cabriolet was simply removed, and from then on it entered the parlance of automotive history as the “Cold Beetle”. The Beetle cold cuts were then produced in a quantity of 120,000 copies. A convertible made history and was in demand from then on. To this day, classic Beetle convertibles still promise pure driving pleasure.

Until the 1970s, the VW Beetle was one of the most frequently driven police vehicles

The Hebmüller Beetle convertible from 1949 was available in 696 copies. In addition to the convertibles, Hebmüller also came with a Beetle police version that had simpler door versions for better and quicker access during operations - sometimes just a thick cord! A few years ago, the Berlin Police School received a Beetle Peterwagen for its teaching purposes, which is of course also a wonderful museum piece.
The VW 1300 Peterwagen was used as a police vehicle until well into the 1970s. This dark green vehicle with white fenders and blue lights on the roof also had a megaphone on the right front fender and was quickly on the scene.

Der VW 1200 und der VW 1300 kam vor gut 70 Jahren unter dem Spitznamen KÄFER auf die Straße und erfreut bis heute die Oldtimerfans und -Veteranen

 

Automobilgeschichte: der VW Käfer als Oldtimer ein Renner mit Boxermotor

Wolfsburg - München - Herford. Käfer! In 70 Jahren wurden von dem VW-Käfer, der eigentlich VW 1200 und VW 1300 hieß, ganze 22 Millionen Fahrzeuge produziert. Liebhaber und Fans haben alle Käfer-Modelle bis heute. Die ganze VW-Käfergeschichte können wir hier nicht aufrollen, nur soviel zu seinem Ursprung: Der Volkswagen von 1935 hatte ganze 22,5 PS und einen luftgekühlten Boxermotor. Der Boxer blieb, nur die Pferdestärke stiegen ein wenig ;-)) : maximal bis auf 50 PS. An diesem Wochenende (11. und 12. Januar 2025) war das VW-Käfer und Veteranen-Wintertreffen am Güterbahnhof in Herford. Für uns ein Anlass an legendäre Käfermodelle zu erinnern, denn wer einmal Käfer gefahren ist, der weiß: „Liebe geht durch den Wagen“. Da gab es zum Beispiel das Hebmüller-Käfer Cabrio aus dem Jahr 1949, das in einer Stückzahl von 696 Exemplaren gebaut wurde. Ein anderes, einmaliges Käferchen war das Stoll-Käfer Coupé aus dem Jahr 1952, das einmalig in der Edition 1 von 1 gebaut wurde. Diese Varianten findet man nur noch im Museum. Ihre Seltenheit und ihre Sonderkarosserien machten aus teils eigenwilligen Modellen hochwertige Sammler-Exemplare und schrieben VW-Geschichte. Das "Zeithaus" der Autostadt in Wolfsburg (tägl. von 10-18 Uhr geöffnet) hat übrigens einige in der Ausstellung und ist immer einen Besuch wert! Es gab sogar einen Käfer mit dem Spitznamen der "Millionär" !

Er schrieb Unternehmensgeschichte, weil seine Außenhaut aus goldfarbenem Lack bestand, die Stoßstangen in Strass verziert waren und für My Lady das Interieur stilgerecht in Brokat-Stoff ausgeschlagen worden war.

Ja, richtig gelesen. Mit einem Spitznamen wurde auch der „Weltmeister-Käfer“ belegt, der am 17. Februar 1972 als 15.007.034-ster Käfer hier vom Band rollte. Mit diesen Zahlen hatte damals Volkswagen das Produktions-Monster Ford aus Detroit, mit seinen amerikanischen T-Modellen locker geschlagen.

Mit dem „Aufschnitt-Käfer“ aus dem Jahr 1947 schrieb man Cabrio-Geschichte

Man hatte den VW 1200 Käfer Cabriolet einfach von seinem Dach befreit, was als "Aufschnitt-Käfer" fortan in den Sprachgebrauch der Automobilgeschichte einging. Der Käfer-Aufschnitt wurde dann in einer Stückzahl von 120.000 Exemplaren hergestellt. Ein Cabrio schrieb Geschichte und war fortan gefragt. Bis heute versprechen die Käfer-Cabrios als Oldtimer immernoch pure Fahrfreude.

Bis in die 1970er Jahre war der VW Käfer eines der meistgefahrenen Polizeifahrzeuge

Das Hebmüller-Käfer Cabrio aus dem Jahr 1949 gab es in 696 Exemplaren. Neben den Cabrios kam von Hebmüller aber auch eine Käfer-Polizei-Version, die für den besseren und schnelleren Zugang im Einsatz einfachere Türversionen hatte – teils nur eine dicke Kordel! Vor ein paar Jahren erhielt die Polizei-Schule Berlin, für ihre Lehrzwecke einen Käfer-Peterwagen, der natürlich auch ein wunderbares Museumsstück ist. 

Der Peterwagen von VW 1300 wurde als Polizeifahrzeug bis weit in die 1970er Jahre eingesetzt. Dieses dunkelgrüne Fahrzeug mit weißen Kotflügeln und Blaulicht auf dem Dach trug auch ein Megaphone auf dem rechen vorderen Kotflügel und war schnell zur Stelle.

370,924 VISITORS IN THE LENBACHHAUS IN 2024 - an increase of almost 70,000 visitors compared to the previous year

Munich. “2024 was the most successful year since 2015 and therefore probably the second most successful year since the museum opened in 1929. The entire team at the house is proud to have designed and implemented this program,” Matthias Mühling told the press. The Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus and Kunstbau Munich recorded a total of 370,924 visits in 2024 - an increase of around 23% compared to the previous year (302,655). The Lenbachhaus welcomed over 2,000 groups and around 700 school classes who experienced the exhibitions as a lively place for art education. The record of 22,430 annual tickets sold also shows that museum visits are enjoyed and repeated.

Matthias Mühling, director of the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, is pleased about the positive response to his exhibitions

“We are thrilled by the positive response and the lively interest in our diverse program. “The solo exhibitions of the British painter Joseph Mallord William Turner, the Chinese artist Cao Fei and the Turkish Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk in particular appealed to a broad audience,” says Matthias Mühling, director of the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus and Kunstbau Munich and chairman of the Gabriele Münter and Johannes Eichner Foundation.

In 2024, the Lenbachhaus also showed exhibitions in London, Madrid, Herford and Montpellier

Since 2024, the Lenbachhaus has been collaborating internationally to present the Blaue Reiter collection at the Tate Modern in London and the work of Gabriele Münter at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemiza - the same also at the Marta Herford and the Pavillion Populaire in Montpellier.
